To me, the power of the visual is less about CGI, and more about the (at least) one minute shot of Ingrid Bergman when she's hearing "As Time Goes By" in Casablanca. You can see every emotion on her face and it pulls my heart out of my chest.
I saw Star Wars in the theater when it played in the 70s, I was amazed at the effects as much as anyone, but I've grown indifferent to them. I want a story that's focused on real people, not spectacle. Biased? I don't care.
