My father was born in 1932 and was autistic as the day is long, not that anyone noticed. Because being intelligent and being able to cope, pretty much meant you couldn't be in those days. Widening the diagnostic criteria and catching people like him, and me, doesn't mean we weren't autistic before. It just means that we're getting better at seeing what it actually is.
