so i think the thing with maples is the taps are sized to make the smallest possible wound that will flow, and they limit the number of taps per tree. There's also something about having them on the same side, I think. The idea being that if you look at a cross section of the trunk, the sap flows in a ring all around the perimeter and the amount you're taking is proportional to the amount of that circle you're distrupting. So a single tap is like 2% of the trees capability. I think.
