to clarify, the quoted figure of $1B/yr is revenue, not profit. Assuming a 50% gross margin, that implies just $8B in profit over 16 years. Since the R&D investments have to be repaid, that means the company would essentially just tread water (using those numbers). This is why multi-billion dollar markets are required for drug development to pay off.
