My guess for what happened last night is simply that everyone tried to connect to the space at once, it didn't work because it was overwhelmed by connection attempts, and then when it didn't work people either gave up or refreshed the page after a random amount of time, both reducing load and implementing a randomized retry + jitter.
So it's funny to think about Elon panicking and yelling "do something!" at engineers whose efforts basically did nothing, the system self-corrected by sucking.
