Okay obviously mass deportation is awful and racist but if I'm being honest I'm increasingly uncomfortable with taking the position that deporting immigrants is bad solely b/c we have industries that rely on being able to exploit their illegal status to pay them below what our laws dictate is our definition of a living wage.

I worry that the folks running the show don't understand the crux of the drama in the Alien franchise.
The "Alien gets to Earth" concept doesn't work. Even David Fincher abandoned the idea for the third film.
The movies work on the premise of "we have to stop the Alien from getting to Earth" because it's very apparent that if the Xenomorph lands on Earth, that's human extinction. It's game over. That's not a movie, it's an epilogue.

It seemed like a pretty good idea at the time to set up a jar where if the kids were ready for school on time, they could each earn a star for the jar and once it was full there could be a reward. It was effective, one of my better plans.

I'd give anything to be able to effectively communicate to people who are going to hand Trump the presidency because they want to protest Biden/Harris's support of Israel how much they're going to regret that decision.

So the entire house is still powered just fine, but for some reason the battery backups inside the house are aware the grid is down, and switch to battery, which begins draining.
This means that the things I plug into the battery backups would be *better* served plugged directly into the wall.
I put my router/internet stuff on a UPS to keep internet in an emergency is possibly, but the end result is that it actually dies first.
How does the UPS/APC stuff even know there's an outage?

Discovered something strange about my solar + battery that I don't understand the mechanics of at all.
We got a whole-home battery when we put solar in. It's Tesla brand unfortunately, the solar company insisted it was the only one they supported that fit my needs.
In any case, whenever the actual grid loses power for some reason, the battery seamlessly powers the house. Lights don't even blink, it's instant.
However, any UPS/APC battery backup systems immediately go into battery mode.

Everyone knows that 5-day RTOs are quiet layoffs, which erodes trust.
This matters because when you list a position as "hybrid", applicants have to ask themselves if the company will just pull the 5-day ripcord some day.

For a while, the open web made tech books obsolete, as any information in a book could be found for free on the web.
Now, Gen AI is making the free tech article web utterly worthless, almost every page is obvious AI slop with no useful information, and the only way to actually get any information is a book.
But slowly the tech book world is being taken over by AI as well, and there's a noticeable lack of human editing at play in many of them, even prestige brands like O'Reilly.

Absolutely insane that Samsung just decided to roll out a change where long-pressing home no longer pulls up Google Assistant, it pulls up some bullshit search thing and long-pressing menu now pulls up assistant.
Just completely inconsiderate to how people use these devices as part of their every day life. My thumb can't reach the bottom left corner of my screen one handed, so Google Assistant is now tremendously inconvenient to pull up. A feature I used nearly every day solely for convenience.

I bought all the equipment and learned how to sous vide early in the pandemic as a tool for meal-prepping lunches for the week.

When I made my "cars and rockets" post, it was in direct response to his Spaces call where he was talking about how "bad" the architecture of Twitter was based on an architecture diagram, and then @npub1r42…j93a asked him what was bad about it and Elon said "well just look at it" showing he thought it was bad because it was complex, and he didn't understand it.
That complexity (and having people on-hand to staff all those services) is what would have kept Spaces online.

And fundamentally the issue here is that if you want to build the kinds of systems that can withstand connection storms, you have to architect around that sort of thing, acknowledge that subsystems can fail and design with that failure in mind.
The end result looks like a fairly complex architecture, with a lot of boxes and lines.
The exact kind of diagram Elon famously thought was self-evidently flawed because he didn't understand it, and believed that simple things are better.

The CTO doesn't know enough to drive technology decisions from the top down, and has instituted a culture too afraid to make suggestions from the bottom up.
Redundancies are viewed as waste. Overprovisioning for large events seen as a "failure to build to scale the first time".
You can't say in a meeting that you think the cache is a single point of failure because the bozo at the top might say something idiotic like "failure is not an option!" and fire you.

It simply has to be said: almost every other tech product in this space has an "announcement + live" feature that can withstand sudden interest at a specified time. YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, TikTok, and most of them involve not just audio but video.
It cannot be overstated just how far behind X is technologically speaking due to being guided by a person who thinks they know everything about technology when they know fuck-all.

My guess for what happened last night is simply that everyone tried to connect to the space at once, it didn't work because it was overwhelmed by connection attempts, and then when it didn't work people either gave up or refreshed the page after a random amount of time, both reducing load and implementing a randomized retry + jitter.
So it's funny to think about Elon panicking and yelling "do something!" at engineers whose efforts basically did nothing, the system self-corrected by sucking.

The goal is such a staggering landslide win for Kamala Harris that it as seen as a nationwide full rejection of Trump and the MAGA movement, forcing the Republicans to rebuild themselves by recognizing that adherence to any facet of Trumpism is a guaranteed loss.
