One presumes he was imagining a slow flow of Hawaiian lava (also not taking into account that a Hawaiian volcano is absolutely enormous and so the lava must have traveled a long way to destroy anything).

In fact, he was buried under many feet of hot mud within seconds of the start of the eruption.
