I would advise generally putting the mounted directory out of the way in its own folder, so it getting stuck doesn't impact you browsing home - then you won't having any problems killing sshfs and remount.
I don't really understand why they don't add a timeout of like 20 seconds and reinstate the ssh tunnel if it doesn't reconnect by then.
