You are spot-on, they could do this. They could find a way that works within the rules they set for themselves.
I have some sympathy for open-source purity distributions. Principles can create momentum to produce better open source solutions. But that's a niche. Most people want software that works.
And what the hell is wrong with GPLv3 anywhere? it's a perfectly good free license.
