this generally tracks with my own experience in the space. Was involved in a phase 1 study where the per-patient cost was around $15k per patient (net), however that research was heavily subsidized with public funds. Note that $1B/yr for 16y of patent protection is just $16B total, which is not exactly an amazing return for $8B invested but is enough to be considered a win.
