i like movies but thinking about how they're the lowest tier of entertainment.

1. video games - demand engagement with some challenge, which is why people get so invested (sometimes unwarranted)
2. literature - requires active attention in order to progress and prompts visualization skills to understand it, even comic books demand this
3. oral storytelling/audio dramas - engage imagination, basically a subset of the written word
4. movies - look at the screen and passively consume

they're the junk food of the arts and you need to work really hard to make a movie on the same level as a book or game
