Today I learned an interesting fact about the famous Diego Rivera “Detroit Industry Murals”, a series of huge frescoes painted for the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1932. They sparked huge controversy at the time - was it because they humanized the unemployed local workers, six of whom were murdered by Ford security during a March that year? Maybe the nude figures holding armloads of grain and fruit? Or was it the representation of Coatlicue, the Aztec goddess, depicting the sacrifice of workers to the “gods” of industry?

It was none of these. The Catholic Church was outraged instead by the panel depicting an infant being vaccinated surrounded by doctors (“three wise men”) and the animals that provides the serum. Thankfully - their efforts to whitewash all the panels in response did not succeed.
