Donald Trump has said if he wins another term as president he will make in vitro fertilisation treatment free for Americans, but did not spell out how he will pay for it.
“I’m announcing today in a major statement that under the Trump administration, your government will pay for – or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for – all costs associated with IVF treatment,” the former president said on Thursday at a campaign event in Michigan, a battleground state. He added: “Because we want more babies, to put it nicely.”
In an interview with NBC before the event, Mr Trump also suggested he will vote to repeal Florida’s six-week abortion ban, which as it currently stands limits the procedure before many women even know they are pregnant. “I think the six weeks is too short. It has to be more time,” he said. “I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks.”
Taken together, the moves by Mr Trump appear to be a recognition that on issues such as IVF treatment and access to abortion, Republicans are trailing badly to Kamala Harris and the Democrats. Ms Harris, meanwhile, gave a prime-time TV interview on Thursday.
