Lasius are tiny little ants. You might know them as "black garden ants" they are among the most common ants in Europe and the US.
There are many species. They are NOT easy to tell apart. I've noticed biologists will write the phrase "an unmistakable combination" in a species description then proceed to say something like "Terminal segment of maxillary palp is rather short."
