I agree with the notion that it's not seen as equal to commercial platforms - because, in reality, it isn't. But changing the narrative is difficult since most people measure a good social media platform by its number of users, influence, or even the company behind it. Mastodon is not a single service, and that alone is a turn-off for many, especially social media managers who focus on follower counts and algorithms rather than real-life social dynamics.
I'm not sure how a PR rework would work when there are 30 000 different servers, each with their own approaches to outreach. For example, I don't even want my own instance, mementomori.social, to grow too large. In fact, if it reaches thousands of users, I'd likely close registrations.
We can, of course, highlight the advantages of the Fediverse, but getting widespread consensus is difficult. Ultimately, people have to discover its value on their own.
