Talking to an intelligent member of the UK financial elite. He is completely in favour of censorship. Thinks the US 1st ammendment is crazy. Believes that online pseudonyms should be illegal. He completely agrees with the UK crackdown on the "far right" protests.
His answer to the danger of the power to censor falling into the wrong hands is "don't let autocrats get into power".
I have reason to believe that his opinion is shared by a large part of the UK political and financial elite.
I see no solution to this. These successful, powerful and arrogant people will not change their minds absent a huge crisis. There is no stepping back from the Road to serfdom. I see a fall. I don't see any way to prevent it.
Our mission is to build the tools for a renaissance. Like Noah's ark, Asimov's Foundation or Rand's Galt's Gulch we can mitigate the fall, protect a remnant and shorten the ensuing chaos. We can try to rebuild on better foundations.
...but I don't think we have the power to stop the momentum of the fall.
I remain optimistic in the long run.
