If you look at the whole Fediverse and not just Mastodon, it doesn't look that bad - just look at the active users dip last October: https://fediverse.observer/stats&months=48
We probably lost a lot of people to Threads & BlueSky, but the Fediverse has been around since 2008, so it's not going to die any time soon.
