Well the default client does have built in ad hoc wifi now too.
But yes, LoRA is very range extending.
Saw Calle talk at the MIT Expo; he was very keen on really focusing on this being done with hardware nobody would consider problematic at customs, or otherwise specialized stuff. You can of course link into it using this specialized equipment, but the goal was really making sure it works as well as it can with JUST the phone in peoples' pockets.
