I wonder if you felt that distance because of the distance she kept between herself and her companions. Like, you were feeling what they were feeling as you watched it, but not her. I think that's interesting, because the first time I watched the first few seasons, I only really connected with the Doctor's POV. The next time I went through, I made a point to put myself in the companions' shoes more. It felt like watching an entirely different show!
