My suspicions are correct - the system runs out of memory. It normally has about 2GB free (3.4GB free after rebooting). Just before it fell over, it was down to 109MB. So I guess it's being asked to do some resizing of large images, and because it pulls them into memory to do so, that explains it. And the processor load is suddenly putting everything into swap.
