And let's not even start on the whole Evangelion tirade with Anno himself being threatened by his otaku public (You can see snippets of them in the End Of Evangelion movie, there's one holding two plushies of Asuka and Rei right in the theatre)
Without a fully established otaku culture, not Lucky Star nor Welcome To The NHK would make any sense, and they're both made in the 2000s
I think the list should start year 2000, but have a special section before titled "The Origins" for those titles that shaped what came later
