The Americas are the example of the second one. The civilization present in 1491 is not the civilization present now. It did not evolve into this. It was overwritten by a wave large enough to displace it.
That is what unmanaged migration at scale does in the historical record. Conquest, replacement, absorption. Peaceful pluralism is the rare exception.
Humans migrate. The question is which version of the pattern is running.
