To me, I find the concealing of information to be more manipulative than if someone just laid out the facts.
This is what's wrong.
This is what we're doing about it.
Gives the daughter the opportunity to "Is there anything I can do to help?" If she doesn't want to burden the daughter, just say "No, we've got it under control, but will let you know if there is something you can do."
