I think that for bitcoin, there is never a rush to upgrade your node for any reason. I can even upgrade to a new version exactly three years after its initial release and be perfectly fine.
When drama like this is happening, you can't tell which side is lying to you until several years pass to let the lies melt away. By default, it's better to just distrust both camps until time kills one or both.
