This is what I mean when I say the Fediverse is centralized around Mastodon. The number of calls I hop on where people say, "Yeah, but I need it to function with the Mastodon API first," is a problem.
The Atmosphere has a similar Bluesky-ification issue as well. We all need to do better here, and I wish the biggest platforms on both sides would take the lead on this if they care about the broader ecosystem.

they don't, a lot of new apps are actually using third parties like selfhosted.social or hosting their own PDS.
Most of that blog post is either wildly incorrect or out of date.

I dunno, if I had concerns that a protocol I liked was concentrated too much around one company, I'd work with the existing community of people working hard to distribute that network as quickly as possible instead of just writing a blog post telling people nothing can be done

- A fourth onboarded on their own
- A library has been shipped that lets independent blogs integrate and is now being used by numerous folks
- There's now a WordPress plugin
- We're working on bridging Articles back and forth on Bridgy Fed
- It became big enough that even Bluesky and Blacksky now use it for their blogs

At this point, Bridgy Fed provides full functionality across the bridge, except for the ability to follow unbridged users.

Bsky growth began before their Series A, at which point they already had 13M users. They had a proven product, and I think that's important to remember here. I'm not aware of any VC funding since that round.
It's also important to remember that there was also a huge push to get everyone on Mastodon, but it did not stick for average users. AP is not a victim here. It's had numerous chances, and will have more chances regardless of Bluesky and ATProto.

My underlying point wasn't even that things are happening. What I'm trying to say is that Bluesky and ATProto are here, and whether you like that or not, we need to reckon with it. There are ways, especially in this phase of development and growth, where you can distribute that power, and it doesn't happen by ignoring it or telling people to use something else you think is better.
Seize while you can; numerous of us are doing so.

The power started with Bsky, but due to the ATProto community efforts, that power is shifting day by day. Bsky has also announced plans to do more work with the community this year. Thinking this is one company's protocol is shortsighted, and if that's the assumption, it's our job to regulate that power by doing things, not complaining about it.

I agree with you there! But often it's not about *how* public things are, it's more about *where* they're public. In other words, many users I've spoken to who are either not bridged or are straight-up anti-bridge have chosen that route because they don't (yet) trust the entities on the other side to have that much ownership over their data. There's also a cohort who don't want to have to depend on *us* to bridge them either.
It's a lot more complex!

I understand the instinct of "make these work together", but there are technical and cultural differences that make it more than just two standards talking to each other. A couple of simple examples are "I don't want to be in a public, auditable firehose" or "I had a bad experience there, I don't trust them with my safety."

Appreciate all the kind words in the thread! That said, I still strongly believe opt-in is a feature, not a bug. The right solution isn't to force people onto networks they don't want to be a part of; it's to clean up the rough edges of unbridged interactions and content so it makes less of a difference.

I have to ask - is building something drastically different in parallel while still making compatibility easy a bad thing?
At #Fedicon, ActivityPub and ATProto folks were discussing pros and cons of both solutions and exploring how the other could fill those gaps in tangible ways. We're sharing ideas, improving each other's solutions, and doing them in *very* different ways while still being interoperable.
This kind of competition is good for innovation.

Both solve problems the other one has, and some folks prefer the tradeoff with AT. Blacksky's strategy is also uniquely ATProto, this couldn't have been done the way it was using ActivityPub (yet!).

Bluesky, being the largest ATProto AppView, means that their moderation decisions have the broadest impact on the ATmosphere experience.
Mastodon, being the largest ActivityPub platform, means that their decisions on how quote posts work have the broadest impact on the Fediverse experience.
The quicker everyone realizes these ecosystems are similar, the quicker we can focus on targeting social siloes that still dominate the social media landscape.

If you want the Fediverse to succeed, you need to step out and understand why other folks aren't joining.
Sure, you can post negatively about the alternatives using an ActivityPub account where no one else can see it, or you can go to the other platforms and tell them why you look down upon them. But neither of those is working, right?
Identify what we're missing. Build it. Work with makers. Fund projects. Stop yelling in your bubble. And, for god's sake, stop spreading misinformation.

Many folks have asked us about auto-bridging Bluesky like @npub1hw0…jzvh has, and it's a good question!
There's two reasons for not flipping that switch:
1. Costs! Bsky has a huge userbase, and Bridgy Fed / @npub13rs…s8u8 is currently mostly self-funded with some community support (ty!). Onboarding a large swath of users isn't something we can afford at the moment. perhaps the push Bsky needs to support incoming longer-form content is more users posting incoming longer-form content and making their feed look ugly 🙂
