during the most of my involvement with ocaml, there were way too fucking many build systems (something like 12 at the peak? it was infuriating); since then basically everyone standardized on dune, which interoperates with opam. i think ocamlfind may also be involved somewhere in the middle, but that may have changed since last time i touched this stuff

I knew that the pressure in the system only goes up so high and that in the worst case scenario of the new valve not fitting, I only had to screw the old one back in and then repeat the process a week later
either way, I'd have to commit one way or another in about a second. the biggest mistake you can make in a process like that is indecision

you still have to set it up to do that, and since I don't use a client like Thunderbird and self-host my email, whenever I needed to use it (once a few years) it was always a dance of "ok, how do I even get it to talk to my SMTP server? do I even have that enabled?"
I remember it being painful, but not the details anymore. I tried getting it to produce a .eml file but that was broken in some other way (line breaks?)

I self-host my email, I also have a Roundcube instance since that's been my preferred way to access mail for ages. (I didn't use to have my own personal computer and used a shared home PC/shared classroom PC/shared research lab PC, so having webmail was way more convenient than using something like Thunderbird.)

is there a web interface for the Debian BTS yet? that would go a long way towards making me want to use it. (historically, I would root-cause the bug myself and then file a report against upstream software after validating that it's a problem there; I kind of dread using any email-based system, whether it's git-send-email or reportbug, they tend to be a nightmare to use with a webmail)

this is an entirely reasonable position and as a software author I'm happy with it, but as far as I'm aware next to nobody actually does that. I've triaged too many bugs which ended up root-caused to "the distro package is too old" or (rarely) "the distro package is broken", and I can't recall any instance where the bug was triaged by Debian first. it's possible it happened and I forgot it, or maybe it was never in the issue text, but it seems very rare despite the huge userbase

I think you highlight an important issue! how would someone for whom Yosys is broken even know that they need to bring it up with the Debian Yosys maintainer? the usual process is:
1. they bring it up on the Yosys issue tracker
2. after some back-and-forth where they're asked to use the latest version, they build Yosys from source, and the bug disappears
3. (crickets) they keep using whatever works for them

Debian, by virtue of its sheer size and popularity, can easily create additional labor (mainly in form of triage and support work) and friction (in form of additional bugs or in most cases, just long-fixed bugs that remain in obsolete package versions) that the upstream is now stuck with, even if they never wanted it
I don't think this is a good thing! it's not enough to deter me from publishing FOSS entirely, but it's enough to give me pause every time a distro is mentioned

ultimately, I think I would like anyone who packages my software for distribution to either:
- package it exactly according to instructions, or
- talk to me about how it's packaged so I can be sure it's actually functional, or
- rename the package to something else (Firefox->Iceweasel style) so that it's not my problem when it breaks any more, or
- not package it at all

maintaining packaging scripts doesn't magically give you a deep understanding of the application you're packaging, and applying mechanical fixes that you think are good is a good way to cause problems to downstream users

the biggest counterargument to the distro mode of software delivery that I know is that it's not uncommon for distro maintainers to just break packages, or to be hostile to upstream efforts--I've been told to not bother maintaining a debian/ because the first step in Debian is to `rm -rf` it
since if they break it, it's on me to fix it, why would I want them to package it?

yeah, that sounds right to me--I tend to worry about people relying on it without thinking (as you should, in case of primitives like this--they're supposed to be robust and thus reduce cognitive load!) and getting caught in edge cases
it's also true that at some point you have to balance the value of improvements to that with the loss from the missed edge cases, which I find very hard to reason about
