This is kinda of a deep cut but among my friends who work/know the international diplomacy sector, we've been severely amused that #China has just been casually producing Malay and Indonesian speakers at a rate that Australia could never, for all of its cockerel talk over the decades about its commitment to Asia-Pacific (which includes language studies etc - this is why Chris Hemsworth got a little viral here for being able to count to 5 and ask about the weather in Indo 🤣).
Anyway the thing that mainland students are always encouraged to do is figure out their 'new' names in the foreign language they're studying, and I'm used to interacting with English ones but it's been a trip to find the Malay speakers because their names.... Are... So.... Bahasa Malaysia is the official or standard Malay that's based out of Johorean Malay. Bahasa Melayu is any one of the many variants (dialects even) that's actually spoken by people outside of formal settings.
(Tho in this case I keep seeing this guy on my fyp because idk how it started but apparently some Indonesians were bothering him.... Because.... Malay language is from Indonesia.... Which is correct enough.... @nprofile…nnjv the funny thing to observe is as the pan-regional institutional meetings for coordination are no longer happening, "standard" B.Indo is clearly diverging at a greater pace compared to the other "standard" Malays of the other sister countries simply because there's a control group at the national/institutional level in those territories where Malay speakers and national speakers are practically synonymous the way it's not in Indonesia (as Malay is seen as a regional language). It's been interesting to see the South African Cape Malays + Sri Lankan Malays joining the social grouping because of the internet too even if they're more accurately Indonesian based on modern borders.

@nprofile…gmna it's kinda like you have parliamentarians who wants to flog their pet issues + a core constituent of nationalists right, re: Acheh independence or Javanese language? You can over or underestimate their hobbyhorse. The government(s) hasn't shifted positions for a while now on this also, but maybe you're thinking of affiliates trying to test the waters. In any case, what I am trying to convey is that, is there traction? Maybe in a different administration.
That said, normatively I wonder how much Bahasa Indonesia as a term is a settled matter within Malay-speaking regions (as comparison's sake) - do they also operate in a dual mind way the way we do, as people who actually speak both Malay and Malaysian, compared to those who'd speak Indonesian and Madurese or Javanese ie where Indo is clearly a different language. Because that might be as illuminating to get how Malaysians think of it - I forget to mention SG calling it Malay also contributes.

@nprofile…gmna i think calling it a debate overestimates the supposed discourse - there's at least a couple of things that confuses the issue, even as the official term for the language is Bahasa Malaysia and has been for a while now despite the momentary change: at the elite/bougie level people are fluently bilingual and codeswitch a lot + BM being a useful acronym for either + Malay being the English word for the language generically. So there's some attempts to refine it when needed as bahasa melayu Malaysia (I mean for one obvious reason being Malay in Riau or Brunei or Pattani would already be different enough to matter).
But at the everyday level, there's confusion because of the codeswitching but most ppl go with BM'sia for the formal term. Language proponents do talk about it but it doesn't rise to discourse.

I moved on from this lens too quickly (it's a crop sensor lens but at 23mm it gives me about 33-34mm on my full-frame camera and manual focus, so I thought I wouldn't like it for daily use) but rather than dreaming about another new lens I'm going to stick to this for a bit and get a good use of it, other than shooting my (very accommodating) girl cat.

This year's Eid in Malaysia is so fascinating pop culturally - so for the respective language markets, Malaysian songwriters have been quietly (??) dominating the respective markets when it comes to festival songs (eg China gets our CNY music; Indonesia gets our Raya music; even southern India I think gets our Deepavali music but more commonly our people pen songs for their movies too) but it's always been quite separated for natural reasons. This year though I'm seeing more confluence. This isn't even the first Chinese Malaysian Raya song for 2025 that got on my feed lol. I think we're all collectively warming up to the upcoming Kongsi Raya (CNY and Eid will fall on the same set of days lmaoooo and naturally that's a pun on Gong Xi - as kongsi raya literally means "shared festival/holiday") from 2029 to 2031. We're going to be so stressed and useless 😂
