yeah, on my old thinkpad i just used i3wm and pretty much only ever ran things fullscreen or split-screen, and mostly worked out of terminals. but it was just so inefficient, i'd be so relieved to get back to my windows PC and start actually getting work done rather than typing commands over and over. so on the new thinkpad, i figured i'd try to set up a windows-style GUI environment and it's like. i guess linux can't even do icons still?? crazy

one reason i can't use linux on my main PC is that, on a near-daily basis, i find the only way to do something i need to do requires old or otherwise weird software which only has a Windows version, or has documentation which assumes you're using Windows. getting these things to work is a struggle, even on their native platform. imagine if i was running them using WINE! how would i be able to tell whether the problem was my fault, or the program's, or WINE's fault, or what? i think i'd go insane

i think implicitly if they have "generate code" as their whole reason to exist, they err on the side of producing more code. i've seen them respond to a basic project file configuration issue that maybe needed 5 lines changed, with a solution involving creating multiple new files and wrappers over existing files. it would sit there happily generating the thousands of necessary lines of code which were mostly repeats of other code but with different names

it's very difficult to explain to linux people that, i have a folder called "Software" with loads of nested subfolders containing programs, tools, games, etc, many of which are more than 20 years old. occasionally i need one of these programs, maybe once every few years, and i go in there and click on the .exe and it works instantly. next to the .exe are dlls, which are also 20 years old. no package manager needed. the whole thing works great - on Windows, and of course, on WINE

of course, since package updates are causing these problems, i've tried the obvious solution: just don't update packages. this goes about as well as ignoring your tamagotchi: eventually the system shits itself to death. depending on your chosen distro, you either become unable to install new programs at all until you agree to upgrade all the others, or if you wait too long, you get so out of sync that the package manager itself gets confused and tries to destroy your OS instead of upgrading it

you get a segfault and type "where" into gdb and it tells you. gives you a whole stack trace. but try typing other simple questions such as "why" and it's extremely unhelpful

realism really fucks up games. for instance, a real house would have some stairs that creak. some of the floorboards make a different sound to others. that's realism. if you put that in a game, the players will be walking back and forth over those floorboards over and over. visiting random patches of floor in various different sequences trying to get the secret to unlock. but this is a fully realistic house. the only secret is one dead rat and also all the asbestos

it's a really interesting thing when a product, or an entire industry even, is oriented at about a 45° from the direction you're going. you'll be interested, enthusiastic, but frequently confused by the choices that are made. things you consider essential will be entirely absent, and nobody will even know about or discuss them. i've seen this all the time with like, music tech, cameras, creative software, programming languages and frameworks, it's kind of a universal experience (for me at least)

functionally also, i find it orthogonal to what i often want. i think the platonic eurorack ideal is a kind of generative art. you configure a dense cyclic graph of multiple interdependent closed-loop control systems. this incidentally produces music. but your job is not to produce music, your job is to play factorio with sound. this is very cool and i enjoy doing it as much as anyone. but mostly i just have musical ideas in my head and i want to use the synthesiser to actually play them

the reason the minimoog was such a big deal was the noodles are INSIDE the unit. the roadies loved it. vcs3 did one better and had the little pin matrix instead of the noodles. bringing that rectilinear calm to the user. no hint of the hidden noodle chaos. plus brians ferry and eno could arrange two of them back to back and play battleship in between gigs

like i dunno i've just never got it aesthetically. you have all these rows of knobs and sliders you can reach out and manipulate, all mounted to the front panels of these beautiful little rectilinear units which are all screwed together into a holistic, bespoke system. and then the way you actually USE them? involves covering the whole thing with fucking noodles all over the place. you keep catching your hand on them. theyre all different colours. just very stressful

i think i'd get into eurorack shit if they ditched the mini jack nonsense and replaced them with something much better like adat over toslink. that way, every patch cable could carry 8 channels of polyphony, which is finally enough to actually play music
