There is no gain, imho.
If there's no update it's basically a "ping".
If there's an update it will download a small diff index (just the difference versus your local one).
If you've missed more updates the diff will get bigger multiplied by the number of them.
If you miss 10 updates you'll end up downloading the full index.
App updates downloads will not happen until needed, and under your control.

* #AuroraDroid is back
* #GadgetBridge + #Comaps = ❤️ (GB doppelganger will be fixed soon)
* #LocalSend got fatter but faster
* #Joplin version fixup

/PS: F-Droid Basic 2.0-rc0 is now suggested. Have fun! 😉

2026-08-04 13:27:29 UTC

#FDroid & Basic 2.0-rc0 are live:
* Reduce opacity of feature graphic
* Enable certificate transparency for known domains (Both thanks to Thore Göbel)
* Remember expanded state of app description in app details
* Fix bug with display of chosen panic app (Full only)
* Fix bug with DB migration when updating from older versions
'R' stands for Release, so get all your devices (#Android 7 or newer) updated, test a bit, search a bit, install a bit and report your pain points. #KeepAndroidOpen

#Google already gatekeeps targedSdk, each new Android will block older "unsecure". Today about 33% of apps in the #FDroid repo are built reproducible signed by the developers. F-Droid & Basic clients can update unattended on Android 12+ since early 2024. Apps are sandboxed by your Android, we function as a "package manager for #Android". We have some checks in place, but true, we can't check billions of line of codes (half by AI now 🙃). We trust the devs, but we also verify, is that bad?

2026-07-25 17:24:01 UTC

This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is live:
* #Fennec & #WebLibre #Mozilla #Firefox updates
* #Mattermost PSA
* #OrganicMaps choose your server
* #OSMAnd discover features
* #OfflineTranslator for your desktop
+ 35 new apps
& 321 updates
- 2 archived
Plug in: https://f-droid.org/2026/07/24/twif.html
/PS: We've heard a couple of cases where in 2.0 search appears broken. If it happens to you, make sure you run latest alpha11, do ping us and mention your device and Android version

Do try to separate different meanings of "slop". Note that many are indeed developed with the help of some tool. But, if an app on #FDroid has content/feature issue (50% are missing?!), it's worth to raise an issue, first with the developer, then, if no progress with us.

More than 70 organisations signed a letter saying NO!
#FDroid wrote posts on why NOT!
We've talked with you and your representatives, around the world.
We've made the #KeepAndroidOpen website to explain it.
If you read the #Android tech news, you saw it.
If you use a search engine, you found it.
If you've asked their own #Gemini, you got the summary.
But who didn't see, hear or read anything from above? Yes, #Google

"Free" in English is almost a double entendre when it comes to software. While we know what F in #FOSS means, we need to reach users out there who don't. #FLOSS was created so the focus is moved from monetary value back to "freedom".
Software is not created in a void, it takes contributor time and attention to be able to maintain, update and improve it.
The #OTF grant allowed #FDroid to explore how to get sustainable funding and report our findings to all.

#FDroid won't be a registered developer or a registered store, most app developers won't either. To install apps 3.9 billion users will need to activate developer options, reboot then wait 24h. No one will do that.
Which were your arguments though , when you just repeated the Google PR blurb of "nothing changes"? Because we see a lot of change...

#FDroid Basic 2.0-alpha6 is live, so make sure you take it for a spin and shake it really good.
We polished a lot of features: translations and RTL fixes, faster apps processing, better categories, fix CJK search, add monochrome icon, fixed mascot icon (no more cut antennas), and more.
We are also hardly working on integrating what we call "The Advanced F-Low for all users: Balancing badness and chores with sanity".
After rebooting your devices, please wait 24h for our full announcement!

It does not matter how the bits travelled through the ether.
Will #Zapstore bow down to #Google and become a registered dev? A registered store? If not... then 3.9 billion users can't install zapstore-1.0.0.apk. The end.

The issue was explained back then and several times after that. It feels disingenuous to repeat it like this is something new or against OM, when you know why and how to answer: Only old #FDroid installs from before TetheredNet are affected, new installs are not. The message (touch it!) guides the user to enable the AF.
As you know, in #FLOSS, you can always lend a helping hand, but that issue is no longer present in the WiP 2.0 alphas, where AFs are filtered through search.

We can't realistically keep up. Better ping your favourite dev and ask them about their policy and tell them your fears (licensing incompatible with #FLOSS, corporate lock-in, etc).

#FDroid Client 2.0 is on track, already at Basic alpha5, did you test?
Besides a plenthora of cosmetic modernisation, it gets heavy rewrites internally.
One feature for #Android distros developer is the ability to "add a default repository".
Want to know how that works? How that changed? Read @npub1a50…evl6 's post here: https://f-droid.org/2026/03/28/how-to-include-repos-in-rom.html
/PS: Make sure to forward this to your favorite secure and private distro developer. 😉

2026-03-05 15:51:36 UTC

If something is open you can't make it "more open". Adding more bureaucracy, more "register now or else" does not make anything more open, but adds friction, gate-keeping and centralizes power more at the whims of Google. 🤷
Please do take time and write to your local representative, the site has all the info and the links that you need.

2026-03-05 15:22:14 UTC

This is not a purity test, we don't want or need 100% FLOSS or "go away". No, each step, each #FLOSS app that replaces a proprietary app is a win. Just because you/me researched and were able to buy a device with an unlockable bootloader and a custom Android version available does not mean that 3.9 billion users should be abandoned or punished.

#FDroid has a board, old news, time goes by, we get busy with the apps, the client, the repo, the server, the imminent danger, the #FOSDEM, and terms come to an end.
We seek an enthusiastic, collaborative and diverse board that can support our community as effectively as possible.
Nominations are now open to select up to four volunteer directors to serve for two years each.
How? When? Where? Who? Read: https://f-droid.org/2026/02/26/board-of-directors-nominations.html

https://keepandroidopen.org/ has a section for users too.
Simple example, you want to install a nice app your friend made/recommended, you run stock Android, installation is rejected. The end.

People used the site links to report to #EU, yes. They got back a template answer that points to #DMA Article 6 (4) saying that Google would be allowed to take "necessary and proportionate measures". Yet you should remind them that Preamble 50 paragraph 5 clearly states that "The gatekeeper should be prevented from implementing such measures as a default setting or as pre-installation."' which is exactly what they intend to do from September. #IANAL
