Our friends who know anything about the medical system say that no one is ever meant to pay these bills. If you have insurance, what happens is: the hospital sends the insurance company this bill, the insurance company then says “Yeah we’d like a 95-98% discount,” the hospital says “sure” and then the insurance company pays. If you don’t have insurance, what happens is: you just don’t pay, and you have a giant medical debt as a black mark on your credit score forever.

Book review: Original Sin by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson chronicles the trainwreck that was Biden's 2024 presidential campaign, and early signs of Biden's mental decline.
The book starts slow and is a disjoint collection of anecdotes slowly building up. The really exciting bits start at more than halfway into the book, in the Chapter titled "The Debate". It was strangely fun to relive the unfolding disaster in late 2024 through this book. Maybe there's a genre for this kind of biographies.
The book is helpfully armed with an index, so if I were to read it again, I'd start from page 185 "The Debate", and use the index whenever it refers to unfamiliar previous episodes.
GC people may be disappointed to learn that there's no reference in the book to the gender wars which we were all certain were the main cause of Trump's win.
Jokes aside, I learned that Biden placed the interest of his family ahead of his country, especially the final act of Biden pardoning Hunter and his other family members, making a nice precedence for Trump to pardon Jan 6 insurrectionists.

Instead, families are left to “ask for help” on their own: You find the village. You join the app. You move closer to your mom. Those who can cobble together a network—by virtue of luck or wealth or people skills—come out ahead. Everyone else, the “village” wisdom implies, isn’t asking hard enough.

Last Sunday on the weekend before the Cup Day public holiday the Victorian state government released a 10 year plan for industrial land.
It proposed the release of 5800 hectares that would fit up to 100 000 jobs.
I looked at it to see what it said about public transport access to jobs.
I searched various relevant terms like buses.
Nothing.
Public transport access and services is not mentioned once as a consideration for industrial land.
The plan is apparently the work of the Department of Transport and Planning.
The amalgamated department has a name that implies there is some sort of coordination.
But it doesn't look like any of this happened.

That's fine. Wikipedia is free culture and it's good to take from them and adapt. The problem, as I understand from the article, is lack of transparency. What are the grokipedia changes from the the original wikipedia entries? What are the reasons for these changes? It's not really a wiki if there are no history edits for each entry. But this is all moot. The use of LLM means there's no accountability or transparency whatsoever and grokipedia is literally unusable.

A physical examination of the girl revealed a Tanner stage III for breast and Tanner stage I for pubic hair development. Height was 108.1 cm (+3,2 SD), weight 19.7 kg (+0,54 SD) and bone age advanced to 6.9 years (Greulich and Pyle). Pelvic ultrasound demonstrated increased size for age of both uterus and endometrium corresponding to Tanner stage III-IV. Estradiol was 0.04 nmol/l and GnRH stimulation test revealed a peak LH of 2.0 IU/l with a LH/FSH ratio of 0.77. MRI of the pituitary gland was normal. These clinical, radiologic and laboratory findings were consistent with a diagnosis of peripheral precocious puberty due to exogenous estradiol. The hormone therapy of the father was changed from a gel to a transdermal patch, and the girl experienced regression of breast development, normalization of growth velocity, pelvic ultrasound and GnRH stimulation test.
