PEN America gets captured: organization accepts Palestine as a member and rejects Israel; Jewish chief executive resigns after accusations of being a “Zionist” and not signing on to Israel’s “genocide”
https://whyevolutionistrue.com/2026/02/19/pen-america-gets-captured-organization-accepts-palestine-as-a-member-and-rejects-israel-jewish-chief-executive-resigns/
> The decline of PEN American was first evidenced to me when, in 2015, it decided to give a “freedom of expression” award to the magazine Charlie Hebdo, many of whose writers (and a few others) were killed in an attack by al-Qaeda, presumably for making fun of Islam and Muhammad. The award was formally called the “PEN/Toni and James C. Goodale Freedom of Expression Courage Award”, and was to be conferred with other awards at a literary gala banquet.
> But six PEN members refused to be “table hosts” at the banquet, and then 139 other members (now 242) signed a letter taking issue with the award. Why? Because although Charlie Hebdo is well known to be an “equal opportunity offender,” whose metier is mocking everyone, including politicians and religions, those PEN members said that it was a no-no to mock Islam because its adherents were “already marginalized, embattled, and victimized.”

USA
> Hospital billing is a baffling charade
https://acotra.substack.com/p/hospital-billing-is-a-baffling-charade
QUOTE
My husband happened to be uninsured when this happened,3 so they sent us a $300,000 bill for the episode.4 The emergency care itself (all the imaging and testing and stabilization they did on Wednesday and the trauma surgery on Thursday), plus staying overnight on Wednesday, only cost around $100,000 total — leaving $200,000 for a two-night stay in the hospital.
It turns out it would have been cheaper by more than an order of magnitude to hire an ambulance to take him out of the hospital right after the surgery, outfit our house with all the necessary medical equipment, and hire a rotation of nurses to watch over him 24/7.5
Still, I honestly might not have questioned it long enough to do that math, except that for some reason they decided to itemize the bill for us. Among dozens of items, there was $878 for this $45 foam pillow, $232 for a large “level 3 sterilized” hospital gown that looks just like this one for $5.50, and $42.50 for a 10 mg tablet of the muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine — which normally goes for 30 cents a pill from the bottle.
Our friends who know anything about the medical system say that no one is ever meant to pay these bills. If you have insurance, what happens is: the hospital sends the insurance company this bill, the insurance company then says “Yeah we’d like a 95-98% discount,” the hospital says “sure” and then the insurance company pays. If you don’t have insurance, what happens is: you just don’t pay, and you have a giant medical debt as a black mark on your credit score forever.

...
> But the comparison to the famous hoax by Alan Sokal, as well as the follow-up by Helen Pluckrose, James Lindsay and Peter Boghossian, is in any case misleading. Both of these efforts targeted journals in academic subfields that had gone deeply awry; they were a deliberate reductio ad absurdum. The paper produced by Claude, by contrast, is hardly absurd. While it has its shortcomings, and is not exactly earth-shatteringly original, nobody can seriously call it a reductio. Had a fellow student submitted it to my department’s graduate student workshop when I was doing my PhD, my respect for them would have gone up rather than down.

Book review: Original Sin by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson chronicles the trainwreck that was Biden's 2024 presidential campaign, and early signs of Biden's mental decline.
The book starts slow and is a disjoint collection of anecdotes slowly building up. The really exciting bits start at more than halfway into the book, in the Chapter titled "The Debate". It was strangely fun to relive the unfolding disaster in late 2024 through this book. Maybe there's a genre for this kind of biographies.
The book is helpfully armed with an index, so if I were to read it again, I'd start from page 185 "The Debate", and use the index whenever it refers to unfamiliar previous episodes.
GC people may be disappointed to learn that there's no reference in the book to the gender wars which we were all certain were the main cause of Trump's win.
Jokes aside, I learned that Biden placed the interest of his family ahead of his country, especially the final act of Biden pardoning Hunter and his other family members, making a nice precedence for Trump to pardon Jan 6 insurrectionists.

Scott Adams couldn’t stop frittering his talent and fortune on doomed attempts to be taken seriously. But someday Elon Musk will buy America for $100 trillion, tell the UN that he’s renaming it “the United States of 420-69”, and the assembled ambassadors will be as silent as the grave. > For a long time I’ve maintained that Neanderthals, which most anthropologists seem to think are a species different from Homo sapiens, in fact constituted a population that was H. sapiens. And we know that’s true of Neanderthals and “modern” H. sapiens, because we carry some Neanderthal genes (I have some), and that means the two groups hybridized and that the hybrids backcrossed to our ancestors—and were fertile.

https://www.thefire.org/news/he-spent-37-days-jail-facebook-post-now-fire-has-his-back
QUOTE
In September, after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Larry shared a meme on a Facebook thread about a vigil in Perry County, Tennessee. The meme quoted President Donald Trump saying, “We have to get over it” following a January 2024 school shooting at Perry High School in Iowa. The meme included the commentary, “This seems relevant today …”
Just after 11 p.m. on Sept. 21, four officers came to Larry’s home, handcuffed him, and took him to jail. He was locked up for “threatening mass violence at a school.” His bond — an astronomical $2 million!
Police justified the arrest by saying that people took the meme as a threat to their high school, which has a similar name to the one where the school shooting occurred 20 months earlier. However, police have been unable to produce any evidence that members of the public took the meme as a threat. As The Intercept noted: “There were no public signs of this hysteria. Nor was there much evidence of an investigation—or any efforts to warn county schools.”
Larry was jailed for more than five weeks. But that wasn’t the only thing he suffered. During that time, he lost his post-retirement job doing medical transportation and missed the birth of his granddaughter.

The Most Useless Piece of Parenting Advice
https://www.theatlantic.com/family/2025/11/it-takes-a-village/684835/
QUOTE
No one knows where the adage “It takes a village” came from exactly. Though it was popularized by Hillary Clinton’s 1996 book of the same name, an NPR investigation suggested that it might be “some sort of pseudo-African mix of Hallmark and folk sentiments.” But the proverb is now ubiquitous, along with its equally grating corollary, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” To name just one example, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ baby bible, Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, asserts “Family and friends can be helpful; don’t be bashful about asking for assistance” and “Try to create a ‘village’ around you.”
...
“It takes a village” is advice that sounds communitarian, but in fact, it pushes for an individualistic solution to a societal problem. And it can distract people from demanding the kinds of solutions that could truly help families: longer parental leave; more flexible remote-work policies; child-care support; a work culture that accepts the constancy of kids’ sicknesses. Instead, families are left to “ask for help” on their own: You find the village. You join the app. You move closer to your mom. You need to be friendlier, more active, more approachable, more involved.
Those who can cobble together a network—by virtue of luck or wealth or people skills—come out ahead. Everyone else, the “village” wisdom implies, isn’t asking hard enough.

Detransitioner Lawsuit Against Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy Is Dismissed
https://benryan.substack.com/p/detransitioner-lawsuit-against-dr
QUOTE
According to the suit, Dr. Olson-Kennedy, who is a pediatrician, prescribed Ms. Breen puberty blockers on her first visit when she was 12 years old, without ensuring that the youth first underwent a psychosocial assessment as recommended by WPATH. At the time, Ms. Breen had been wrestling with her gender for less than six months, the minimum period required for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria under the DSM-5.
Ms. Breen received care from Dr. Olson-Kennedy at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where the physician was the head of the pediatric gender clinic.
Dr. Olson-Kennedy prescribed testosterone when Ms. Breen was 13 and then signed off on her mastectomy when the child was 14. She later encouraged Ms. Breen to undergo a hysterectomy, but by her late teens, the youth was harboring doubts about her gender-transition treatment and did not undergo the procedure.
During this period, Ms. Breen suffered from increasingly severe mental illness, contrasting with claims by leaders in pediatric gender medicine that gender-transition treatment helps mitigate psychiatric symptoms.

UN 216: Industrial land plan release ignores PT access
https://melbourneontransit.blogspot.com/2025/11/un-216-industrial-land-plan-release.html
QUOTE
Imagine a land use plan based on 100 000 new jobs by 2035 but no provision or mention of public transport.
Is this something out of California in 1965?
No, it's what passes for Victorian land use planning for jobs in 2025.
Last Sunday on the weekend before the Cup Day public holiday the Victorian state government released a 10 year plan for industrial land.
It proposed the release of 5800 hectares that would fit up to 100 000 jobs.
I looked at it to see what it said about public transport access to jobs.
I searched various relevant terms like buses.
Nothing.
Public transport access and services is not mentioned once as a consideration for industrial land.
The plan is apparently the work of the Department of Transport and Planning.
The amalgamated department has a name that implies there is some sort of coordination.
But it doesn't look like any of this happened.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you are referring to as curry laksa, is in fact, curry mee.
Glad you love it. Melbourne does import Malaysian cooks sometimes but in general the Malaysian food there is not quite as good as in Malaysia

That's fine. Wikipedia is free culture and it's good to take from them and adapt. The problem, as I understand from the article, is lack of transparency. What are the grokipedia changes from the the original wikipedia entries? What are the reasons for these changes? It's not really a wiki if there are no history edits for each entry. But this is all moot. The use of LLM means there's no accountability or transparency whatsoever and grokipedia is literally unusable.

Eight Sleep generally warms when the user is drifting off, then gets cooler as they enter deeper sleep. Santiago Lisa, a software engineer in Pittsburgh, told me he woke up because his bed was stuck in deep-sleep frigidity. He tried to warm it up using the Eight Sleep app, but no dice—the app was down. Then he tried the system’s manual buttons. No dice there, either—they also require the Cloud to function. Jordan Arnold, who works in the video-game industry in Washington State, told me that his girlfriend couldn’t sleep because her side of the bed was stuck at its highest temperature, 110 degrees Fahrenheit. She slept on the couch. Other poor souls, who had put their bed in a sitting position to read and were now stuck there, spent the night in the world’s most high-tech Barcalounger. A Jetsons vision of the 21st century did not include Mrs. Jetson stuck in an upright and locked position because her bed could not connect to a data center in Northern Virginia.

One of the best rants from Gareth Roberts' book "Gay Shame":
> One last thing before we dive in on genderism. The actual mechanics of human biology are a distraction in this debate, albeit one you will see sex realists sidelined into discussing by energy vampires. It is a pointless waste of time, as productive as having an argument about the Yeti or the Loch Ness Monster. Suffice it to say, humans are a sexually dimorphic (existing or occurring in two distinct forms) species. Other species are sometimes sequential hermaphrodites, humans are not. The existence of male and female humans with developmental sexual disorders does not change that. As the commentator Ben Sixsmith has noted, ‘This kind of argument is absolutely infuriating. It’s like saying that because it’s hard to precisely define “table” – does it need four legs, a flat surface etcetera – you might as well call a fish a table.’ Neither does the fact that some men enjoy dressing in (culturally specific) women’s clothing or wearing cosmetics mean that sex is fluid and a ‘spectrum’. The existence of men adorned in ‘feminine’ garb, from Heliogabalus to Harry Styles, does not mean that humans are hermaphroditic. That would be like saying that because some humans have always occasionally dressed up as horses that humans are somehow on a spectrum of human and horse. It’s quite telling that genderists often talk about ‘transgender’ people existing throughout history. Since ‘the dawn of time’ is regularly said, as for example by Eddie Izzard in an interview in The Guardian. No sentient life, no planets, gravity still weak, the universe still expanding, stars coalescing, elements just beginning to arise from primordial chaos … and a purple-fringed person tweeting that they’re finding this whole creation thing really very transphobic.
