So Sam Altman's response to concerns about the wastefulness of his company's technology is basically "Well, raising humans consumes a lot of energy too!"
Either he has finally fried his own brain with his slop machine or he doesn't even bother any more to hide the degrading, dehumanizing, and despicable mindset that fuels the industry he's in.
Either way, those people shouldn't wield any power in the real world, where the rest of us 'dispensable humans' dwell.

I wish people would stop using the "but there are legitimate use cases" argument to recommend some slop machine to me.

Dear companies,
data protection laws are meant to protect people's human rights, not to facilitate your business!
Their sucess isn't measured in how much you like them, but in how well they're protecting people from you. And honestly, judging by how careless some of you treat other people's personal data, this protection is necessary!

European tech companies should demand stronger regulation, especially on privacy!
Why? Because it would give them an advantage over their US-based competitors, who are neither willing nor able to operate under strict rules.
That's why the European Commission's Digital Omnibus package is such a bad idea. Weak regulation doesn't create a level playing field for all. It benefits the big and powerful players more than anyone else!

In Austria (maybe among other places), something - let's say a field of study - that is deemed to have litle to no economic value is often labelled "orchid".
Of course, capitalism cannot appreciate something for just being beautiful (or interesting). If it cannot be commodified, it must be worthless.
Although the label is meant derogatory, I like the symbolism. Because appreciating something like beauty for its own sake, without needing it to have value, is a pretty anti-capitalistic message.

We need to oppose the European Commission's digital omnibus disaster! We need to oppose it loudly and immediately!
Not only is the leaked proposal an outright attack on our digital privacy rights. The Commission would also set whatever will be left of the GDPR up to fail eventually.

LLMs are harmful. Not just because of their output, but also because of the output their owners explicitly design them not to produce.
For example, try asking Meta's LLM what the company does to prevent their tech from having inappropriate conversations with minors and see corporate censorship in action.

Assuming that there will be an AI one day that is able to solve most of our problems for us, what would that make of us? Would our lives be degraded to finding more and more problems, which we wouldn't be able to solve ourselves without the machine any more? Would our role be reduced to feeding tasks to the machine and consuming its output?
Who would we be, how would we feel, in a world of problems without being able to do anything about it?

A friend asked me what my goal was, given that things like genAI, surveillance based advertising, and corporate social media wouldn't just go away.

When I chose to study law at the innocent age of 19, I still had the naïve notion that legal practice would be a logical, almost mechanical exercise. I thought that courts and authorities were always neutral, objective actors staffed with people who would apply the law dispassionately and base their decissions on their profound knowledge about the subject matters in question.

As a child I was taught that it's rude to point my finger at someone. I wish people nowadays were taught that it's also rude to point their phone's camera at somebody's face, even if they're not taking a photo or filming (taking someone's picture or filming them without consent would be more than just rude).
I wish more people would be considerate enough to just tilt their phones a bit when using them in public.

The EU-US Data Privacy Framework stipulates purpose limitation as a principle for the use of personal data that is transferred to US entities (article 5 letter a). Which means that data that is collected for some purpose, let's say having a social media profile, cannot be used for another (incompatible) purpose, such as LLM training.
It also states that an entity that keeps violating those principles should loose its certification.
So why is Meta still certified?!

(1/2) Austria's supplementary data protection laws are seriously flawed in many ways.
For example, section 24(6) of the Austrian data protection act ("Datenschutzgesetz") apparently allows controllers to grant access or delete personal data during ongoing complaint proceedings against them. Instead of still being sanctioned for taking their sweet time doing what the GDPR requires them to do, they can even end those proceedings with their belated action.

Meta is still "certified" under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework although they
- violated the GDPR by circumventing browser sandboxing to link browsing histories to individuals,
- falsely claim to have a legitimate interest in training their simulated intelligence on user data, which renders all data subject rights ineffective, and
- are facing numerous lawsuits because of other alleged GDPR-violations.

Today I was approached by a teenager who had a glimpse into the book I was reading on public transport - "Empire of AI" by Karen Hao - and was interested in what it's about.
After I gave them a short summary of what I've read so far, they asked about my job and I tried to summarize what I do in a few sentences.

One of big tech's marketing ploys is to keep telling us that progress - at least what they see and sell as progress - is inevitable.
Surprise, it's not! If it were, they wouldn't have to pour billions into marketing and lobbying just to make sure everyone buys into their version of our future. A future, in which all of us are dependent on what they're selling. Cui bono, one might ask.

Meta's claim that they have a legitimate interest in using user data to train their simulated intelligence is ridiculous!
Once the data is fed into their LLM, exercising data subject rights such as access or deletion becomes impossible. Depriving millions of people of their rights cannot be legitimate. Period.

Better don't believe that Meta will always respect objections to their use of personal data for the training of their LLMs. Imho, even now, they're providing the opt-out mainly to check the temperature.
If the backlash isn't strong enough now, expect them to change their terms of service sooner or later, claiming all personal data on their platforms for their LLMs. They won't back down. And they certainly won't respect anyone's privacy!

Those who use "Luddite" as a slur obviously know nothing about history.
The Luddites were professionals who knew perfectly well that the combination of capitalism and technology would wreak havoc on soviety. As it did back then and still does today.
Some tech bros should better read books instead of just feeding them into their latest large language model.

I've tried something new today.
Instead of filing my next privacy complaint straight away, I sent it to the heads of the offending organization first. I also demanded a formal apology for not respecting my privacy rights, full transparency, and a description of what they will do to comply with privacy law in the future. Or else.
Let's see if they are willing to learn something. I gave them two weeks to decide.

Today is a good day to replace some U.S. big tech oligopolist's service with a European alternative. As is tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow too.
I'm not saying that it will be easy all the time. But it's necessary.

Can we please establish the social norm not to point our phone's cameras at each other's faces in public, on trains, busses, and so on? Just tilting the phone a few degrees would be enough to stop creeping others out.

Austria in political turmoil an likely on its way to a far-right prime minister. Apparently the old economy got the upper hand within the conservative party.
Expect deregulation of the economy. Expect euroscepticism. Expect important issues like privacy to be labeled as impediment to conservative and false notions of "progress" and "innovation". In short: expect huge steps backwards.

More than six years into the General Data Protection Regulation, I think it’s safe to assume that opt-out shenanigans are intentional infringements.
Yes, I’m looking at you Apple. Their privacy policy on Enhanced Visual Search may not look all too bad at a first glance (I need to dig deeper though). But why not do it right and make it opt-in? They should know better given that they build a whole lot of their marketing around privacy.

Those who claim not to care about their privacy because they “have nothing to hide” might want to consider that confidentiality isn’t the whole picture. Privacy also protects our dignity.
Just as we don’t want others to do with us as they please, we shouldn’t accept that they use information about us as they want.
We must not become subjects in thrall to other people’s tech! After all, we are individuals and deserve to be treated as such.

Privacy is not just a curious hobby or some infatuation of the paranoid. Losing it has real consequences on a societal and psychological level.
European politicians would do very well to remember that when they‘ll discuss mass surveillance once again this week. They can‘t claim to do government for the people while also pushing for the erosion of our privacy!
