This “cybersecurity” push from a bunch of “Western” governments keeps rearing its ugly head. It’s misguided and underscores just how difficult it is for governments to both balance concerns and have a firm grasp of the technology issues involved. A generous take is that the metaphors we use to explain this stuff lead to assumptions that just aren’t true. (A less generous take is there’s some Big Brother-y stuff behind the desire)

For various reasons I’ve had to become pretty familiar with the MachO format over the years. It’s pretty simple but in that simplicity lies great possibilities. Like multi-architecture binaries which have eased Apple’s transition across processors over the years while avoiding the pitfalls Microsoft has had to deal with. This is a great read and worth it even if you don’t need to know the details.

The thing with the original Aqua being over the top in the way it was is that it had previously been next to impossible for any OS to achieve those effects. Mac OS X introduced a first of its kind compositing window server that enabled all those effects. It took Microsoft and X11 years to catch up.
While the transparency, pinstripes, and genie effects all feel gratuitous now they were a flex that put the Mac back at the very top of the technology pile. Sluggish but a brilliant bet on the future.

Some macOS AppKit software I wrote back in 2008-ish had a pattern where I’d do this:

Comparing string literals is now a warning.
It also uses “@selector()” as a unique key for associated objects. It wasn’t a true selector. But it’d produce a stable key.
And along with a few deprecated API warnings that’s about it? Not bad for software that predates the iPad and started a year or so after iPhone shipped.

I love it. So much opportunity for assistive technology. What Apple does is groundbreaking by focusing specialized accessibility concerns upon a broad consumer device making it better for everyone.
I take your point with regards to the regulations. While I trust Apple I have (some) control over my government and I just wish my favourite company could play nicely with people’s favourite way to govern themselves. So much *is* gated by legislation but that’s a tractable problem.

As of iOS 18 there’s new API to replace the flashlight and camera buttons on the Lock Screen. So, yes, you can. Was that prompted by this sort of scrutiny? I doubt we’ll know publicly but suspect a story will circulate quietly eventually. But to John’s point—you don’t need to delete the Camera app for that.
Interestingly, the Camera app on the Lock Screen runs as a different user and can’t see the owner’s data. It is engineered to be secure that way.

There’s been a determination by democratically elected governments that the public interest is best served by general purpose computer devices being open to, and to not disfavour, third party software. The particulars of the requirements are as Byzantine as one might expect. This whole thing stinks. But, to me, it is the teenage years where a maturing Apple faces the reality of being untrusted with much of citizen’s lives. I like their basket. But we can’t all share the same.

You’re saying a similar thing but just have a differing degree. I tend to agree that iOS devices are at their best as “console” style electronics. But, as you’ve acknowledged, many people use these as their primary computer and this will likely grow. Given they’re de facto a common general computing platform the heightened interest and monopoly busting fits more along with standardizing how cars interoperate. There’s a public interest.
