For most of my adult life I've turned down most store points/loyalty cards because "I don't want to be tracked."
But I'm starting to change my mind. Companies are tracking us anyway. Even if I don't swipe a points card at the POS, they're still correlating my purchases via my debit/credit card & probably by my cellphone entering the store if not facial recognition via the cameras.

Absolutely. I'm on the tech side & had to switch to freelancing from my corporate job because the advancement just wasn't there - nor the flexibility when I started having children. I'd guess that in research & sciences there's even more of that. And in Canada we have many fewer positions in research than in the USA. At least that was the case 15 years ago...

There's also something to be said for practicality factors. Science minded women in my circles have opted into the more applied branches because the jobs are there. I don't think Canada has as many research or pure science jobs outside of teaching.

The only career pressure was from a parent toward accounting, but that wasn't technical enough for me so I pursued Computer Science. Luckily my teachers treated me as a treasure for being one of the only girls in highschool computer classes & in university (Canada). 😆

What jobs exist in physics? 🤔 My brother graduated with a physics degree but the only jobs really were at universities with low pay & you don't own any of your output. There was a lot more in an applied direction toward engineering.

#Netflix used to work - but now the number flashes briefly before it transforms into a circle.
The piss poor security is pathetic. I don't like having to tell my kids to all hide their eyes before I punch in the pin before a family movie or show.

Many streaming apps let you put a pin on the adult profiles within an app. For many reasons but also to keep your young kids contained into the kids profile. The code you type in is *supposed* to be hidden from view.
However almost every streaming app we use makes you move around an on-screen keyboard showing the kids in the room what you typed in. They mostly don't work with the number pad on the remote.

- Lots of old games remastered.
- A few rhythm based games.
- A bunch of childish looking games with MIIs or these odd childlike anime style characters.

It's way different. Assuming that finding the legit source of the installer is the same - assume that I am on the correct vendor website..
Windows it's download this file and then double click to run it.
On Linux, even IF you get the ease of a file to download, often you have to give it permissions to run, you don't just double click it.
I'm no Windows fan by a long shot, but there's 0 sense in pretending that Windows isn't much easier for software installation.

For me, the complexity isn't in the use of the command line.. but in that of the thousands of apps people want to install it's
A) Sometimes hard to find the right, official instructions for that app.
B) Then there are like 6 versions of instructions based on distro, architecture or repository.
C) Then your terminal spits out a ton of 'scary' junk at you that it's never clear if you have to read through that & look for errors or warnings.
For the average person that's friction.

To be honest, as a #Ubuntu user for nearly 2 decades, and someone who's always vowed that I would set my kids' up on #Linux for their first computers, to build a foundation of open source OS familiarity and give them the maximum freedom and choices for their future computer lives.... I'm really losing my will to do that.
Nothing f*cking works on Linux. And I say this as someone who's using what's supposed to be the most user friendly distro. And I'm just darn tired of wrestling with my PC.

So I *did* end up getting a new #keyboard (Keychron K1 QMK - low profile, red switches).
And I'm pretty happy with the layout and feel. Jumped through hoops to get the basic Launcher web app to connect on #Ubuntu, but for the life of me I can't get VIA to connect. Pretty bummed that it seems like I won't be doing much in the way of customizing. Tried all the advice I could find on Reddit and elsewhere.

FYI #Canadian folks looking for options for data storage, hosting etc on this side of the border - Sync is a Google Drive / Dropbox alternative hosted in and Canadian owned. They have a basic free plan to try it out.
Granted you don't get the whole Google Docs office suite for your files, but for just storage, they're a good option.

Don't think I want the number pad, but I also don't want it to be super crammed with all keys - arrows, etc all directly touching each other. It has to be low profile and I don't think I want a split/ergonomic layout. Don't want to break the bank.
Lots of devs talk about how much they love mechanical keyboards but don't they require more force to press the buttons? I also share an office with my husband sometimes and being crazy loud won't be very nice. 😆

Ok #keyboard nerds.... I need some education. For over 10 years I've been using this cheap Dell keyboard (like the photo). And I like it because it's low profile and the force needed to depress the keys + travel distance of the keys, is pretty minimal. I don't like a lot of dramatic finger movement/force, it gets painful after a while. I also like the built-in volume wheel...
Anyway... I think It's time to start shopping but I don't know where to begin.

- Godot v 4.3
- Ubuntu 20.04
- Installed Godot from Ubuntu Software Center
- Installed the export templates from mirror successfully
- When doing an export for linux or windows it errors when creating the pck file.
-Says it can't copy the export templates
- I tweaked permissions on them.
- I tried re installing them from a download.
- I tried moving them & setting a 'custom' template.

FOSS is a community. I do some free labour on this. You do some on that. We're all left to participate and contribute in our own way. Or not. There's nothing forcing users to contribute and therefore you are doing free labour without the guarantee of return.
Sure it's *very nice* when people give back!
But if you're resentful of the idea of creating something without a certainty of return.. then FOSS isn't the paradigm to use.

Until we can write *real*, performant frameworks in Native-JS or in Typescript directly in the browser that have better DOM integration.... we will never escape this.
Userland keeps patching the problem with the next bandaid (frameworks, transpilers, livewire, HTMX, etc).... when only the browsers and the creaking, sluggish, joke of JS browser standards can actually fix it.
Browser tech jumped the shark so many years ago I don't know what the damn hold up is.

Fam.... if you're typing a lot of boilerplate you're doing it wrong.
- Copy from your last project.
- Create snippets for your IDE.
- Use multi-cursor line editing.
- Use a framework.
- Etc.

My opinion is that in our capitalist system you're supposed to charge the most you can get away with until you lose too many customers. Clearly this DM is in high demand or is very good or some other value.
Also say you play once a week... That's under $200/month (CAD). That's not unreasonable for a hobby combined with a social activity. Heck many people spend more per week on alcohol or athletics.
Anyway it was a neat discussion about how we value our interests & people who create #art.

My friend group is chewing on a discussion about DMs who charge for their services which we all agreed was a cool side-gig & a perfectly valid thing to do - both to charge if you're good and to pay if your group needs a #DM.
The contention came when a friend discovered one who was charging $45 CAD ($33 USD) per person per session.
It was unclear if this friend was shocked anyone would pay that or that anyone would charge that. The avg was ~$25.

In case we ever wondered why #Nintendo is so rabidly aggressive against mods, roms & any other homebrew stuff with their old games. It's because they just keep on revamping & re-releasing their past games to get another generation of gamers to pay them again for the same game. 🙃

Yes, I take a vit D supplement daily. Plus it's not like every available inch of skin is covered in sunblock. Just the main sunburn spots - nose, cheeks, back of neck, top of arms. Most the rest of my body isn't protected well. Plus we have a pool so I'm outside so much & don't reapply anywhere near reliably enough that I usually end up sunkissed but not burnt. 😆

Good point! My brother also wondered if those big companies just outbid all the more niche advertisers, so even though the data to more specifically target me exists... it still comes down to who will pay most for those ad plays.

Maybe I've just so confused Google by having a clearly female profile but watching a lot of male-typical content like tech, fitness, construction, gaming, etc.... that Google has just utterly failed to put me in a category. 🤷‍♀️

They haven't even figured out that if I've seen an ad 100+ times (which I have with the money transfer service) and I haven't clicked the ad or visited their site by now... Then I'm PROBABLY not a good target for this ad & it's time to try another.
Is this not just very basic & obvious?
If I have to keep watching a few seconds of ads before I can skip... I'd at least like to be shown a variety of products & services I might not be aware of. Broaden my horizons or something.

Maybe I disabled a "personalized ads" checkbox somewhere.. but then wouldn't they fall back to matching the ads to the content of the video? Like broadcast TV used to do.
Like if I'm watching a programming video shouldn't I see some ads for - crazy thought - technology? Or if I watch an exercise video I should see ads for fitness or athletic stuff?
All this profiling, tracking & analyzing Google does... and they are just super bad at advertising.
It's insulting really.

With all the surveillance & data collection we online users are subjected to.... you'd think it would at least work well.
I make no effort to block ads & trackers on YouTube besides my usual adblocking extensions - worse I use their native Android app which I'm sure tracks the shit out of my viewing habits.
And yet the only ads I ever see on Youtube - over & over are for a service to send money overseas & a big online shopping site. Over & over.

A lot of Canadian cities have gov funded employment related organizations that do employment related data collection, training, placement, recruiting etc. They often have local job boards.
For example:

They often have "workforce" in the name.

Used my new Rip Cut jig (sled?) for the skill saw to cut down a sheet of plywood & begin building a set of quintuple steps to go with the backyard ninja course. Really slick.
Very simple design, legs fold down for storage. 👍
Ran out of 2x4s before I could make the rest. 🙃

Talk to any gender & they'll bemoan the impossible standards of the other.
I can't count the number of times I've heard complaints that women rejecting abuse & control is them being "too picky". Dating is hard. Finding the right person even harder. Playing the gender-blame-game is reductive.

This fear, that humanity will stop reproducing because of AI girlfriends always seems backwards to me. As critical as men think they are in the reproduction equation.... it's never come close to being difficult for a woman to find a way to become pregnant. In fact it's often too out-of-our-control easy.

Kids, husband & I are going for our #karate belt testing this afternoon!
Youngest is aiming for orange belt & the other two are aiming for their blue. Husband & I are currently unranked although we have been in class for two years so... it will be nice to see how our sensei ranks us.
