I've been using Kagi for a few months and no joke, it has transformed my experience of using the Internet. Easily worth the 10 USD / month to me.
Their Masto feed has loads of these neat little 1 minute demos, and I am continually discovering neat new tricks.

The price of batteries is coming down so fast, that this paper has basically said it makes more sense to build a solar project, and then 5-10 years later invest in batteries *then*, when the cost of batteries is so much lower than it is today.
For context, we've seen the cost of batteries in China drop by 30% in a single year (!) for one of the larger tenders in 2025

I spend more time on Masto than Bluesky, but I find it interesting that this guy is running almost the entire stack required for bluesky, including ingesting the firehose of all the millions of users, on a 200 USD / month server:

Has anyone seen more info about how this switch from Microsoft in Denmark is being implemented?
The article here says they’ll essentially be giving half the gov Libreoffice but staying on Office 365 for everything else, while the other half keeps using the whole integrated Office 365 suite for a year.

WOOT! I pay for Youtube, to avoid the ads, and because honestly I easily use it enough to justify the cost, but paying something like couple of months of subscription fees to increase the chances of there being a viable alternative in future was an easy decision to make.

I’m really glad you raised this as I work in this field and the framings I see used are often really problematic, because they shift responsibility to all the wrong places.

I think I know what you're getting at specifically now, and I've put a post together with some thoughts.
TLDR: I think you'd need to coin a term that communicates this idea of building with cloud primitives in a way that emphasises the bits you're referring to, because it's not in the interests of the biggest cloud providers to do so.

This looks cool - and I had no idea it existed before reading a post by @npub1945…2lkl.
It's useful to have a thing like this to point when you're arguing for public money to spent on stuff other than Palantir or AI factories, because if you are talking about digital skills, then stuff like this is arguably much more directly helpful.

Can I check? Are you profiling the serving of a HTTP request using Rust there, but using the Firefox Profiler to make the output easier to read and navigate?
We've mainly been using it for tracking CO2 client side, and I hadn't seen examples of using it server side like that - tres neat!

I want to take this article and replace every mention of the term word “AI”, with “Expensive External Consultants and Systems Integrators”, because it's strategically about as smart.
Sure, there are some places where AI and machine learning can be helpful and very valuable, but this blind faith in a piece of tech, when you see something like an 80% failure rate for internal AI projects (see the rand corp report in next post) should be ringing SO many alarm bells.

me too - it’s not an easy one. I’m deliberately not trying to prescribe any interventions beyond gathering some data because I’d like to ask some people who have more expertise than me.
I guess the one silver lining is that this at least it gives us chance to think who gets excluded from events during the earlier pre-covid formats - I found them super useful professionally , but I’m also aware that they were kinda designed to suit people like me more than other ppl too tho.

I must be missing something obvious. Is there a nice way to do threads in one go with Mastodon?
There isn't an obvious UI element see in Ivory, nor the official Mastodon client, and yet I see people like [@molly0xfff](https://hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff ) doing absolutely epic long ones.
I think this is because very post has to be a reply to the previous one, so there's no ID to link to, but surely this has been solved already, right?
If there's a good published how to, I’d really welcome a link to it.

Aww yiss! Got my PR merged into #uv's docs for their neat support of running commands from a #python package hosted directly on github.
This is really nice for trying out CLI commands stuff before they're published to PyPi proper:

Wow, this @npub1yng…nhrk fellowship looks great - if you live in Germany and are a maintainer of a widely used yet poorly funded open source project, they basically pay you to maintain it for a whole year at something pretty close to market rates, with the perks of being an employee like paid holidays and all the rest.

I'm suuuper late to the party, I know, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good the 3B Llama3.2 model is to use on my 16GB 2020 macbook M1, via Ollama and @npub1gv2…tlwl's stellar “llm” package.
I'm referring to this here:

It feels comparable to the speed of using the lightweight models on Perplexity.ai, and it feels fast enough to me just run queries locally.
Really nice piece of CLI design - it's a real pleasure to use.

I mean, as soon as I pick up a phone and ring a call center, I want something to be sending a SAR so we *both* have access to the same recordings so I can refer to them, and the law is pretty clear that I should be able to request this.
I've been too lazy to request these before but I'd totally pay a fee a year to have this automated, based on number my phone knows I am making.
I mean... if I'm gonna accept being on hold, and losing all this time, I should at least have this shared with me.

Dear GDPR nerds. I know my calls are being recorded for training purposes when I call various utilities. I want to argue that they have not done a thing I know I asked for on a recorded call.
Are the tools to help ppl make Subject Access Requests of these recordings in 2024?
I figure these would exist, as the GDPR has been around for ages now.
I can’t be alone in wanting this, right?
