a professor of public policy at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, has warned that Israeli and US rhetoric suggests Israel could be planning a nuclear attack.
“I think there may be a surprise for everyone, such as a tactical nuclear attack by Israel in a limited way, just to allow Israel to come out as a nuclear power,” Barakat told.
“This aligns with the wording that Trump has been using – that this is going to be a ‘big surprise’, ‘killing civilisation’ – that sort of rhetoric,” he said.
Israel has never officially acknowledged possessing nuclear weapons, yet it is widely understood that the country maintains a nuclear capability.
“They’ve had [nuclear capabilities] and they’ve been using it as a form of deterrence, but that did not work. They ultimately got attacked – and attacked severely – by Iran, and this was not the first time,” Barakat said.
Tactical nuclear weapons pack less explosive power and are designed for battlefield use.
“I think now, in their own minds, [Israel] think they need to come out as a nuclear power, but they need to demonstrate it in a limited way – and in a way that does not have a major fallout across the region, so that it’s there but not too devastating,” Barakat said.

The use of Palestinian civilians as human shields has been an Israeli army policy during its war on Gaza, according to the testimony of a senior officer in a non-reservist brigade.
"In Gaza, human shields are used by Israeli soldiers at least six times a day,".
According to the article, Israeli soldiers routinely force Palestinian civilians to enter #Gaza homes ahead of military operations to ensure that no explosives or combatants are there.
The Israeli army normally uses dogs for these missions.
The officer added that the lack of dogs was the "unofficial excuse" for the prodecure.
The use of Palestinian human shields has become systematically used, and the individuals used in these procedures are referred to internally as "shawish", the officer said.
"Today, almost every platoon keeps a 'shawish,' and no infantry force enters a house before a 'shawish' clears it," he wrote. "This means there are four 'shawishes' in a company, twelve in a battalion, and at least 36 in a brigade. We operate a sub-army of slaves."
He said that he attended a meeting where a brigade commander presented the use of human shields as a "necessary operational achievement to accomplish the mission".

The incident, which occurred on July 5, 2024, resulted in the detainee being admitted to hospital. A doctor at the facility, Professor Yoel Donchin, told Israeli newspaper Haaretz he was so shocked by the man’s condition that he initially assumed it was the work of a rival armed group.
The military’s own indictment described soldiers stabbing the detainee with a sharp object near his rectum, causing cracked ribs, a punctured lung and an internal tear.
The #US Department of State called the allegations “horrific” at the time and demanded a swift and full investigation. “There ought to be zero tolerance of any sexual abuse, rape, of any detainees, period,” then State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.
According to the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, a human rights organisation, despite hundreds of reported alleged abuse cases since October 2023, Israeli authorities have brought indictments in only two incidents, with no prison service personnel charged.

Rubble can help strengthen eroded shoreline areas, expand the coastal zone by reclaiming between 740 and 1,235 acres, and develop Gaza’s port and possibly even artificial islands for tourism and infrastructure.
On land, the rubble can be recycled into #eco-friendly construction materials such as pavement blocks, concrete and road base layers, turning destruction into a foundation for recovery and sustainable development.
Current proposals for #Gaza include establishing mobile debris-processing stations, developing labs to test recycled materials for safety, and preserving selected ruins as memorials and documentation spaces. In this way, Gaza’s rubble could one day serve not merely as a reminder of devastation but as the raw material of a renewed future born from its own ruins.
Ultimately, however, all these visions depend on ensuring international accountability for what has become the largest deliberate environmental destruction in modern history.
Rebuilding Gaza is not merely about restoring walls, it is about restoring life, dignity and sovereignty over a land that refuses to die beneath its own rubble.

Footage has emerged showing the public executions of three men accused of being Israeli collaborators in #Gaza City.
BBC Verify has verified that the location of the executions was a street outside Shifa hospital in the centre of the city, which is the focus of a major Israeli ground offensive.
Videos circulating on Sunday evening showed at least five armed and masked men, three blindfolded #Palestinian men kneeling on the ground and a large crowd.
One of the armed men is heard saying: "The death sentence has been decided for all collaborators".

These “Popular Forces” are a collection of murderers, rapists, drug traffickers, and Takfiri terrorists who once belonged to al-Qaeda and ISIS branch groups. In addition to this, some of these gangsters are corrupt militants who formerly worked for the Palestinian Authority Security Forces.
Israelis strategically bombed all of Gaza’s jails and police stations, allowing proven criminals to roam free.
After Israel had freed these militants, it had tried several times to use different groups to loot aid and fight against Hamas, but had largely failed to develop an effective strategy. Then came the invasion of Rafah on May 6, 2024, where the Israelis seized the crossing point with Egypt.
Upon Israel’s seizure of Rafah, it began properly cultivating Abu Shabab’s militia forces in south-east Gaza, inside a zone completely under Israeli military control. These militants would then loot aid trucks, store it in warehouses under the watchful eye of the Israeli military, then drip-feed it onto the black market at exorbitant prices, so the poorest Gazans were starved.

The media advisor for UNRWA confirmed in statements to Al-Araby TV that the agency rejects any participation in projects seeking to force Gaza’s residents into displacement, stressing that Israel’s plans are not limited to moving Palestinians to the south of the Strip but rather aim at expelling them outside Gaza.

“The situation has not changed,” one EU diplomat said, referring to a formal meeting of #EU ambassadors last week which also failed to agree to the Commission’s proposal. The diplomat said the issue was now in the hands of the EU’s foreign affairs ministers, who will meet informally on 29 August.
"The refusal of certain member states to take even this smallest possible step to pressure Israel, while civilians continue to be killed and starved in Gaza, is absolutely incriminating,” said Martin Konecny, who heads the European Middle East Project in Brussels.

Al-Quds Brigades has released the final message from an Israeli soldier held in Gaza, recorded before contact was lost with the unit guarding him during Israel’s ground invasion of Deir al-Balah. In a video, he urged Israel to allow food into Gaza before “I die from starvation.”
According to the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), contact was lost with the unit guarding Rom Braslavski on July 22 following a ground Israeli invasion of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, leaving Braslavski’s fate unknown.
In the footage, taken two days before contact was lost, Braslavski described witnessing the devastating impact of starvation on Gaza’s children through televised reports, saying they looked like “skeletons”.
He also begged “Israel” to “allow food to enter before I die from starvation,” urging, “If not for the children in Gaza, then for your captives in Gaza.”
He concluded by calling on Israel to end the genocide in Gaza.

#Germany and #Italy want to continue #GazaGenocide:
"#EU member states could not rally the support necessary to suspend Israel from the Horizon #Europe fund in response to the war in #Gaza. The proposal needed a qualified majority of member states to pass it. But two of the largest countries - #Germany and #Italy - said they need more time to examine it.
A European Commission proposal to deny #Israel partial access to the EU's €95 billion Horizon Europe research fund failed to garner the necessary qualified majority support when EU ambassadors met in #Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
If agreed, Israel would lose access to €200 millions' worth of future grants and investments in Horizon's European Investment Council (EIC) which specialises in so-called disruptive technologies.
...The Commission's motion to suspend Israel's participation in Horizon is in response to an EU report finding the country had breached #humanrights obligations in the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
After this finding the two sides came to an agreement that Israel would "substantially" increase access to civilians for food and medicine within the enclave to prevent the EU taking action for the breach.
However, the EU says there has been no material improvement for Palestinians.
