I genuinely need people to understand that just because I speak a language well, it's by no means my native language and expecting me to perform well [when speaking] in a business environment is not only unfair, it's unreasonable.
Yes, I consider myself decently competent when it comes to French. Could I talk to a native French speaker from the outer suburbs of Québéc City? Absolutely not, yet for some reason it was considered a failure that I wasn't able to request and understand complex information in a language that isn't my native language, and with an accent that is difficult even for native French speakers to comprehend.
I like to think I speak Spanish fairly well too, however if you try to get me to talk to a Chilean customer I will be absolutely fucked sideways and there's just no way around that.
