🚨 new study alert🚨
Antarctica, after net losing ice through the noughts and teens started to level off and gain ice the last 5 years.
We show that westerly winds and atmospheric rivers as well as sea ice loss helps to explain the pattern.
The brilliant @npub1a4g…3drq led a fine paper with colleagues at DMI, KNMI and in New Zealand.

Our next hackathon/bootcamp on polar climate processes is now open for applications.
Funded by European Space Agency - ESA's climate programe under the #ESApisco project, and in association with the Horizon Europe project #SnowPI, we are looking for talented ECRs and senior researchers who are interested in working with them on small group problems tackling key processes in the #Arctic and #Antarctic.
We will bring together Earth Observation data with high resolution regional climate models to get deeper insights into polar climate processes.

I realise on the fediverse this is maybe asking for a flaming, but yesterday out of sheer curiosity I tried Claude for a simpleish coding task that I'd been putting off (largely inspired by @npub1smx…sjc0 's latest on #theclimatebrink). The performance of Claude was seriously impressive. I am convinced the AI cycle is more than hype (and have been for a while), the chatbots have been a huge attention Jogger, misleadingly so.
Now I'm wondering if there is any serious EU competition to Anthropic? - Mistral's codestral perhaps?
Because this kind of performance changes everything and we can't afford to lag behind...

Whilst waiting for weather to clear would love to spend some time prepping Loops/peertube clips, editing together music, text etc with some very short videos I've shot (very roughly -> don't expect BBC style nature documentaries), while in the middle of fieldwork.
EDIT: I just discovered @npub12k0…e2sz have added creator mode to the @npub17gp…7p4g app! Awesome work - will test it out right now. If it works from #Antarctica, guess it will work anywhere?
What are your recommendations for easy lightweight + ideally #FOSS apps for video editing on an android phone? Don't mind paying but privacy is essential...

IceClimate@pixelfed.social - Wasa station. After a morning of safety training and snow scooter training, we unpacked and I took our snow optical sensors for a walk to test the surface snow grain sizes. All present and correct.
A good view from the moraine over the station and the vast whiteness of the #iceSheet beyond.

Heading South
But not for the warmth.. Tomorrow I'm taking the first stage of the journey to Antarctica, ironically enough though, I'm heading south by first heading north, to Oslo, where the Norwegian Polar Institute have organised an almost direct flight from Oslo to Troll station with a short stopover in Cape Town. Bags almost packed and ready to go... I'm super excited and also suffering a little trepidation.

I have often thought it curious that people (+ e.g. NGOs) will fiercely criticise the grindadráp in Faroe islands, like they do Japanese whaling in the south Atlantic, but the slaughter of narwhal and beluga by hunters in Greenland is somehow seen as "traditional" + "sustainable harvesting", and attracts much less ire.
I would prefer it if neither existed, but that's probably unrealistic at this moment in time. In any case there is somehow a double standard about who is doing the killing.

The LLMs are useful for some tasks, I'm currently tidying up, proof reading and editing a document written by many international co-authors.
The LLM I'm using can very quickly correct grammar and spelling mistakes and produces much easier to understand text from occasionally tortured paragraphs. It still needs an experts eye (mine!) to check no mistakes have been introduced or complexities over-simplified.
This is actually the first time I've used an LLM for this task. It's making it much faster and less painful.
It also explains a lot about academic publishing lately..

really interesting post! We are currently working on an ensemble of high Res model projections looking at cloudiness and it's quite interesting how they all represent the present day. I remain a bit unconvinced by the satellite data..it seems to have big biases that coincide with snow and ice covered surfaces which makes me a little bit suspicious of how good it actually is in the Arctic. @npub1z0w…vryl

Anyone know anything about solidagent.io?
They appear to be an EU hosted AI agent - in the sense that they have the trained models on their own platforms, rather than using an API so presumably queries etc stay on their servers.
Their statements of #privacy etc look good and the test queries I posted (on quite complex #coding problems) were very impressive, but I don't think it's strictly FOSS otherwise.
Would be happy to hear if others have good/bad experience with them as they seem quite new.
