Email from VPS provider: "...the global memory shortage has been driving up hardware costs across the entire hosting industry. RAM and SSDs are more expensive than ever, as AI corporations are consuming a large portion of production capacity... we must pass on parts of these increased costs."
That's bad enough, but they've paid for literally the world's supply of memory and disk with money that does not actually exist, while we have to pay for what we already have with money that does exist.

I've just found my 17 year old Kobo reader. It's charging, but I don't know yet if it will hold a charge.
But I did turn on the wifi, and it said "Last Sync - 15/12/22"
It then proceeded to update the firmware. And the update has worked.

Things that make you go "oh-ohhhh". Just had a call cancelling herself's dentist appointment, along with the weird information that they'll let us know when next they can make any appointments at all.
Not good news, as I was going to phone tomorrow to get a split tooth sorted. Also somehow sinister sounding.
Don't really want to find another dentist, or fewer patients here will give them an excuse to close the NHS dental service locally.

The timetable for fibre in our area is now 2030, but that's followed by "the timetable may change." Based on evidence of ScotGov's & BT's interest in our area, that means the timetable will be elongated, not compressed.
You'd imagine rural areas like ours would have some sort of priority for the £400m allocated to this, given the economic benefits of good infrastructure, but profit beats the common good.
Before someone says "contact your MSP/MP", years of doing that have achieved nothing.

4. And now we have adverts for systems infinitely more opaque than was possibly with Access which, according to the adverts, one need only trust. The copilot slop will surely always be accurate and show correct data.
I wonder how many companies are going to go to the wall blinking in the light of reality before this nonsense goes full circle.

3. Some years later, I worked at a different company. An accounting wunderkind was brought in who promptly wanted to work around the accounting systems by building his own Access database. I warned the CFO about the dangers of this, and was told I should control ,y obvious jealousy of the wunderkind.
Then the auditors came in.
And once again, we came within days of closing down, being declared insolvent, saved only by the accountants working round the clock.

2. Well, someone wrote an Access application that soon was so "useful", it became indispensable. And when it inevitably started spitting out nonsense, it started impacting on a company in a regulated industry for whom I worked. We came within 24 hours of being closed down, and only because several people worked pretty much round the clock to resolve the problems of this poorly understood and undocumented application.

Let me tell you a story.
We've got the telly on, and there's just been a staggeringly unlikely ad for Microsoft copilot slop generator.
But my story is about the 1990s and the 2000s. Do you remember how MS Access was punted as an easy database application (it was), but it had so many come-ons that encouraged users to over-extend themselves. Rather than depend on reliable corporate systems, just bung the data into this application to solve all known problems.

I had time to kill in Lochinver today, as the car was charging on the slow charger. Highland Council clearly only see their monopoly charge network as sources of profit, but can't bring themselves to fix broken units. The Lochinver fast charger has been broken for 3 months. We also know that Scourie, Lairg, Tongue & Tain chargers are out of action. Service? They've heard of it & rejected the notion.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, it gave me a chance for a little photo excursion. Here's Lochinver.

Yuk. The app for the car (rate of charge, duration etc, among other things, so quite useful) now refuses to run if it claims to detect "a VPN". That "vpn" is Tracker Control, or even the duckduckgo app protection, used to stop scummy apps selling my soul. A recent update must have enabled this very useful (to somebody, not the user) feature. I wonder how many other apps will follow suit.
MG iSmart - in the sense that "smart" can be "hurt", I suppose.

That's a bit weird, but I'll post it here in case it helps anyone.
Running KDE Plasma under wayland. I recently added a bottom launcher panel. Some programs now failed to show a menu bar.
The problem is the Global Menu widget, which somehow got installed on that panel (I don't recall adding it, as I don't like a menu in the panel) The widget does not support wayland.
Removed the widget and all is well.

Not necessarily most memorable, but right up there, we were walking in the hills when we heard a cheeping noise. It was a baby otter, all alone, abandoned by her mother. The experts thought the mother was new, & hadn't counted her pups properly while moving them from the natal holt.
Under instruction from the otter sanctuary & our countryside ranger, we went back to lift her, & she spent the night in our kitchen before we took her to the sanctuary. She was released a year later.

An unexpected head-down day strengthening the defences of herself's website after some lowlife used it to test stolen credit card details by creating new accounts & trying to buy stuff. No real harm to the site, we think, other than potentially reputation. Must say the person from the credit card processor Helen contacted (only 2 small transactions worked) was very knowledgeable, helpful reassuring. It could have been a lot worse.
Now to see if the additional defences help.

Wow, it's frustrating looking at the feed from @npub1agz…k395 how other areas are getting improvements to their fibre connections, when here there are no plans to lay fibre at all, in spite of public money for this being gifted to the incumbent monopoly (used in areas more profitable for them), against a background of having just been in South Africa, and seeing the most rural of places with fibre to the premises.

3. It was possible to note the sense of injustice still lingering in the way people were forced to live - white folk in one area and people of colour almost outside the main town, and subject to curfews at night, but she felt that this did not prevent mutual getting along that I thought had been eradicated by the evils of apartheid.
She gave an uplifting story, and her generosity of telling a personal story was appreciated.

The museum is worth a visit. I spoke to one of the curators afterwards, trying to feel my way towards asking whether the essentially European, therefore white, aspects of the shipwrecks, representing various colonial or mercantile powers, left out the original inhabitants of the area.
She felt that the wrecks themselves influenced so much in the area, from leaving names (Arniston is named after the ship that went down there) to founding families in some areas...

This area is where the Birkenhead went down, the first time the "women and children first" rule was put into force, and so resulting in the deaths of almost all the men on board, but few women & children. "Remember the Birkenhead" became the cry after this incident.

We found the Shipwreck Museum at Bredasdorp. Obvious really, as it's 25km from the sea. But to be fair, it's the closest location to mark all the shipwrecks that have occurred off the tip of the continent, Cape Agulhas. Some aspects of the museum reminded me of the Stromness museum in Orkney. The staff are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and there is a lot to see.
For some reason, this display was all about, well, not P&O but po. All receptacles for bodily functions on board

This is sugar cane country, apart from other things. This is how it's harvested. probably a good thing, to get rid of razor-sharp leaves, snakes and other things not conducive to a longer life.
Is this horrifyingly bad for the environment? Yes, but the problem starts way earlier, in monoculture and the amount of water required for these crops.
We're on holiday and have no right to hold opinions on this, especially coming from a place where they horrifically farm salmon

21. Now we're close to Lexie's Loch and in front is The Bog of Eternal Stench*. It always pongs in this spot, and when we had the terriers, they'd squelch their way through alarmingly. Fortunately this was also one of the favourite paddle spots, so they'd cross then head straight down to the water.

20. A bad pic, but you can see why gardening or farming in Assynt is a challenge. The glaciers went through, and Nature said "Righto lads, you've had your fun. Now's the time to make some soil. Grind up that rock down there." They gave it a go, and then said "You know, this rock is hard. Let's sod off. No-one will know."
Of course, geologists may put that slightly differently.

19. There's so much along here, like these weird structures. They're about a metre by a metre, and we know of 3 or 4 other places around the loch where they have been built. We've spoken to archaeologists about them, though, among all the -ologies, archaeology is right up there in their ability not to say "No idea, son." Some are built into a section of living rock, some part of a wall, and some standalone.

18. We're heading home now, but turn to snap the head of the loch. It's quiet here, whereas previously we've heard the echoes of boats and the foghorn at Stoer Head lighthouse. But there's something special about this spot.

17. Finally we are at the high point of the walk, and we can look down on Lexie's Loch. Somewhere down there is The Last Homely House too.
This is the spot where, years ago, Helen's Yorkie, Peggy, came running back to me communicating well enough for me to follow her, and there was a fawn lying on the ground, waiting for its mother's return. Peggy was clever like that.

16. This is better. There's the Queen among the Assynt Hills, Quinag, and it looks like the the old peat road leads to her. To the right, at the base of that vertical hill, is The Druid's Cave, almost certainly a neolithic structure, and another wonderful place in our area. It's hard to find though.

14. We're now at one of the may "DPs" in the walk - Decision Points. We're heading up that large hill to end up high on its right flank. We have no need to "conquer" hills by ending up on their summits, but this is hill at the head of Lexie's Loch. We could go left and then around, or straight and up the side, or a little left, and around the back. Today's we've chosen that route, though it means being cautious around boggy sections down in that glen.

13. #SundayWalk, continuing. Walking past Water Loch, along the ridge which divides it from Lexie's Loch, we get a glimpse of the Loch around which we're inscribing a large oval.

12. We're high up now, high enough to smell the haar that's trying to make its way inland from the north, though we were never in it. Here's Water Loch, so called because it's the water supply for our area. More correctly it's Loch Poll an Droighinn, the loch of the boggy place of blackthorn
We've seen otters in this loch

11. We get reminders of the glacial past of our area. This rock seems to have been carefully placed on a series of bearers. I once worked out the mass of this erratic for an article I was writing. I must have been bored.
It also looks like Douglas Adams' "Deep Thought" who came up with the answer "42". No? Oh, OK then.
Anyway, it has a nice view.

10. And now we have to start remembering the way, as it's such a long time since we've done this walk. But I knew where to pick up the waypoint we call Beagle Rock, just visible here in the U-shaped gap in the terrain. Can you see it?

9. From this point in the #SundayWalk we can look to the right and get a view of the iconic hills of Assynt, though sadly not including the best mountain in Assynt, and the second best on the planet, Quinag. She was hidden in the mist and, perhaps like folk who like her, is way over to the left of this image.

8. Once, more we turn around, as again, at this point we've headed up perhaps the steepest part of the walk, steep enough to have to zigzag up. And there's Clachtoll, widely acknowledged to be the Centre of the (known) Universe, laid out before us.

7. Some years back, I found a barn owl resting in a crack in the rockface behind The Old Soldier's House. So imagine our joy when an owl burst out of the rock face not that far from where I'd seen it years back.
Just in case this was really Jareth*, we kept our distance, in case through dangers untold we had to fight our way to the goblin city

6. Some years back, we discovered The Old Soldier's well. Even now it's at least a metre deep, though the water is almost up to the brim. This is a bout 100m or so from the house, so not too inconvenient. It's quite well built and the stonework extends downwards, as expected from a well

3. Soon we passed an old house. We think this house must have been destroyed by fire - notice that huge crack across the lintel.
I was fortunate enough to have been given some stories about this place from some elderly folk, now no longer with us, most notably one about the tradition of seeing death lights.

2. It's the time of the year for ling heather, and the entire walk smelt of honey. It's such a wonderful time, when you can catch an inkling of what it must be like for a bee. The heather is so prolific this year, though remarkably hard to photograph

#SundayWalk A photo 🧵
It's years since we did a walk we used to do a lot, a circumnavigation of Lexie's Loch. This is a walk that simply means turning left instead of going straight as we leave our gate, and head up into the hills.
Soon, a glimpse of Lexie's Loch can be seen, more correctly Loch Leathad a Bhaile Fhogair, the loch of the autumn settlement.

Something weird, and rather sinister looking, washed up near the beach after the windy week. It seems militaristic rather than a flotation buoy or otherwise. Also, no seaweed growing on it.

Alpine fundis - I'm missing something obvious as I'm trying to get into alpine on a Pi.
I've installed iwd, which needs dbus. Both have also installed the required openrc service. I have added these as boot services using
rc-update add <service> <runlevel>
Also tried the default runlevel.
But rc-status -s doesn't list them, & they never start automatically. They do work when I start then manually.
I can't find any reason for them not to appear in rc-status, unless they are running.
Any ideas?

I noticed this some years back here in Scotland when I had an operation. All the staff wore crocs.
But re Sunanda's original comment, perhaps the popularity isn't for the overpriced branded Crocs, but the cheap and easily-available knock-offs. It's possible the affordability of the manufacturing process, rather than after the marketeers have got to them, that makes them popular.

Enjoying this discussion as, while I'll never take photos anything like as good as either of you do, I do love my Lumix (G97 at present, also GX7 and GX8 in the past). Herself has a Olympus E-M10 reminding her of her original OM1 she still has, 45 years later.

How interesting, and great that the medal is still in the family. An eye surgeon would indeed have been doing a public service, for which from what I can see (can you confirm?) it seems these medals were issued, so thankfully it's not necessarily for something directly associated in support of Empire.

I feel old. I've just bought a quarter terrabyte SD card for £28, delivered.
I'm old enough to remember running a 400-desk company on Novell Netware with 2x 640 MEGAbyte drives, and they cost £10k each.
Every time I casually click the shutter on my camera, I use more data than each user's quota for those days. Every time I take a 2 minute video, I use more data than those entire disks. And those disks took 24 hours each to compsurf.

But what is this?
At the turning point of our daily walk, I saw a bird with unusual wings fly unsteadily into the wind, then settle on the rocks way below near the sea. It then disappeared, incredibly well camouflaged.
The flight gave me an inkling of what it might be, but the photo, I think, confirms that this may well be a young cuckoo.
Can you even spot it on the rocks?
