I had a GCP project suspended by that same team for allegedly mining crypto on CloudRun - and it was really a bug that included the word "crypto" in the error message that got logged. "Crypto" as in CRYPTOGRAPHY. It took me something like 5 days to get it running again. I believe it must have been an AI error - a human could not be that dumb. (It obviously wasn't mining crypto for at least a few obvious reasons: (a) it was a PAYING project - not free compute; (b) it was deployed as the sort of CloudRun compute that turns off except when an endpoint gets hit on the hosted API - useless as a mining operation!

Does anyone else think the distinction between "observable" and "unobservable" entities lacks value specifically for the reason that the category of entity changes as the observer ages?
Like seriously: the ingredients list on a flavor packet for ramen was, 15 years ago, an observable for me - and I could determine whether it was vegetarian, or contained chicken, beef, etc. Now (for me) the text on a nearly-identical packet is an "unobservable" - and what does that do to the epistemic question its vegetarian status? Is it even knowable? What would van Fraassen say?
Does epistemic status of whether the packet is vegetarian fundamentally change if I have to put my readers on to make out the text? What if I use a text-to-speech device?

Someone posted a link to this article this morning and I think you might find it interesting. Lots about bird colors that cannot be displayed on a screen. An artist in Athens Ohio wrote a song called the soon-to-be-world-famous-pancake-song. You will hear it someday. You all will. That's just the nature of the soon-to-be-world-famous-pancake-song.
Every month or so I re-post my soon-to-be-world-famous work of rogue philosophy. There's a lot of dingbattery about, and even more wingnuttery; and I count wingnuts and dingbats as family and friends. This is not that; but... how would you know that? So: I challenge you to enjoy this in two parts, with two different mindsets. The first half is old-school metaphysics, arguing that, if the universe-writ-large is free from all constraints (be they Gods or Laws of Nature), the reflexivity of identity (i.e., *A=A*) is never instantiated in the physical world.
That's a sort of ontic vagueness - but a very special sort, with a very precise character: that reality cannot exhibit any of the characteristics that entail the reflexivity of identity (i.e., self-identity).
The second half is not old-school metaphysics, but speaks to those physical implications: if reality cannot exhibit the reflexivity of identity, what else does that eliminate? (Meaning, what else is reality NOT like.) In fact, I believe this approach can help us understand why reality appears constrained and provides a possible means to approach some of the fine tuning questions.
That's not the sort of thing one expects in #philosophy these days; it's an unusual approach. I hope every month a person or two will give it a read, and I'll find someone who can help render this soon-to-be-world-famous tangle of ideas into something as digestible as the soon-to-be-world-famous-pancake song.

Is reality intrinsically vague? If it is, can we set a theoretical limit on the precision with which reality can be described? And if we can, what are the observable, physical implications of that limit?
This essay introduces a new philosophical argument for ontic vagueness, the argument from freedom. As it arises in the argument from freedom, ontic vagueness takes the form of the specific claim that perfect self-identity does not exist in the physical world: there does not exist any feature of nature A such that A=A. I call this claim the unreality of logic and interpret it as demarcating a concrete theoretical limit on the precision with which nature can be described, due to intrinsic vagueness.

Mastodon, can you help me share an idea?
`Ontic Vagueness: The Argument from Freedom` (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14665746) hit 1,300 downloads this morning. That's a lot for a work of rogue #philosophy launched on #Mastodon.
Nevertheless, entirely b/c of my generally inadequate and anachronistic style, and a glaring lack of peer review (hey, I'm a union organizer, not a doctor), the ideas I hope to share and talk about need a boost to get over the "that's-gotta-be-wingnuttery-amiright" hill with academic readers, and into the realm of argument/debate.
I would deeply appreciate boosts into #philosophy/#philSci space, as well as argument/discussion/critique/brutal-takedown-attempts/etc. It would be very nice to have a few validators share that there are interesting ideas here that are worth reading. It is not hard to reach me by email.

Looking for better ways to say that increasing the resolution of a measurement means the measurand has to be described to meet the desired resolution.
This is to undergird an argument that even an apparently unambiguous measurand like "the number of atoms in a glucose molecule" can become ambiguous at high resolutions because the measurement is "high resolution" only if you've described what it is to be a glucose molecule (and an atom, and a proton, for that matter) at, minimally, the desired measurement resolution.

I do not do a lot of political posting on social media principally for my mental health; I find myself attempting to effectuate change and only effectuating depression in exactly one person.
I am appalled by the inhumanity of our world and may occasionally post, especially as a Jew appalled by Israel's war crimes and the unrelenting desperation millions of Palestinian mothers, fathers and children are facing every day as a result; and as an American heartbroken over too much to name.
I "published" (i.e., "posted without peer review") a short book of #philosophy in January, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14665746 - there's also a practically-free Kindle version if you search for it with a pretty cover - "Ontic Vagueness: The Argument From Freedom". It's about the consequences for the structure of reality if we assume that reality is profoundly free.
I enjoy talking about this latter project; and I think the whole project only makes sense to people with some conversation as it's not in the mainline logic-of-language tradition of analytic philosophy.
