Over the last couple of years, I've had to do some dunging out to make room to get work done on the house.
Exported probably four cubic yards of Stuff (only a small bag went into the landfill—go me!).

I haven't read it personally (I've been following his blog for a few years, so I feel I'm reasonably up to speed?) but I gather he has some solid recommendations for actions to take.

Yeah, definitely one for the Lessons Learned file.
An additonal layer is that we are also prone to high winds. I mean, like realy f'n high winds. (Think the LA Santa Anna wildfires.) I learned the term "ember storm." Which I would have happily gone my whole life not knowing.

Which makes for an unhappy dilemma between standing wildlife habitat versus wildfire mitigation, which my region has to negotiate on the regular.
Not too long ago, we lost <1K homes, because a wildfire just blasted down a creekbed, which residents had been advised to leave unmowed for wildlife support. 😩

She was struck, whenever there was a lesson or an exercise that called for kids to compete against each other, the Native kids just Would Not. Can't even imagine what I'd do in this situation. Even something as comparatively simple & straightforward as desktop publishing (back in the day) I discovered very quickly that if a customer brought in a document for modification, it was nearly always MUCH faster just to reconstitute it from scratch than to try to open the existing file, figure out how it was organized, & try to modify it. Especially if it was made by an amateur. I can't imagine this with actual computer code. >

This one is my personal nightmare. I've been in a few situations where I've been required to sustain attention to check for a low-incidence error embedded in a body of work &—I can sustain it for four or five seconds before my attention drifts.
The •only• way I've ever managed that class of task is to come up with hacks that make the whole thing more interesting. If they want my straight attention, it's a pretty much automatic fail.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.
The first few chapters of The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber & David Wengrow are fascinating, because they describe the collision of conceptual frameworks between Turtle Island Indigenous people & the Europeans (especially the missionaries). I'm steadily falling out of love with Pixelmator after they sold out to Apple. Not least because every version breaks some minor UI behavior in a non-obvious & not useful way. Spotted one of those timeline glitches. Was watching #StarTrek #Enterprise episode "A Night In Sickbay." I'd seen it on it's first run, & I will swear on anything you care to name that the fluid in the tank Dr Phlox had Porthis in was green. I can see it very clearly in my mind.
In the episode last night, it was amber.
...unless the changed it during a remaster or something...?

Oh the f'ing "lazy" flag. Got saddled with that one through my entire childhood. (Try "stuck" or "frozen" or f'ing "exhausted," MOM) It's still a stick I reflexively beat myself with if I don't apply a LOT of conscious attention to giving myself grace.

& we need to reckon with how really deep the fascist vein runs in American discourse.
1st stop: full, complete, quality public education, emphasizing honest & accurate history. (I had no clue how good I had it coming up. We didn't get all of the ugly stuff, but enough to know that the US history isn't all "Pride & Glory.")
