@nprofile…nj9h @nprofile…5rsp Russian nationalists claim the Baltics are theirs...so this is a problem if we follow that rule. We know they want Russia to extend to Kaliningrad and they want control over Poland and eastern Germany too. I'm sure there's more.
Gotta draw the line somewhere. If we continue to let them decide who they want to obliterate, they'll take us apart one by one.

@nprofile…nj9h @nprofile…5rsp The war hasn't been confined to Ukraine for years. Look at Moscow, St. Petersberg and even regions further east. Russia just tried blowing up an airplane at a German airport. There are Russians being blown up by Ukrainians in Africa. North Korea has sent their army to fight Ukraine and they're going to send more. Russian ships are being sunk in the Mediterranean. Russian missiles and drones are being fired at and shot down over Poland, Romania, Latvia. I could go on...

@nprofile…dymg It only took something like a year of total war in Ukraine before Polish truckers and farmers decided to block the border with Ukraine.
Yet it was just a few years ago that Poland joined the EU, and Polish truckers took over routes across the EU from other EU truckers.
So ofcourse there are some click bait headlines on Ukrainian YouTube, years later.
This is what I meant about C/E Europe being an onion. We just keep cutting at deeper layers and crying as we blame others.

@nprofile…dymg I understand. You asked why I didn't respond to each point you made. It's because it's hard to follow, it just seems like the only point is to put down Ukrainians. And if there is more dirt to dig up, it seems like you'll unload them here, no matter how little they're connected to the current issues. Honestly don't know what to do with that.

Mixing everything into a big pot of stew isn't making for good taste — it's overdone and getting burnt. I'm sorry that I see your commentary this way. I mean this constructively.

@nprofile…dymg Ukraine first expressed the desire to join the European Union in 1993, and it became an official policy goal in 1998. The EU was far from excited to make it easy for Ukraine to quickly join, and yes, it's well known that many Ukrainians had a different opinion. Things changed.

@nprofile…dymg @nprofile…85zk Euromaidan happened because pro-Russian President Yanukovych decided not to sign the European Union–Ukraine Association Agreement. Ukrainians wanted closer ties to the EU, so they ousted him. Only then did Russia invade Crimea as a response.

@nprofile…85zk @nprofile…dymg Yep. This is the problem in Central/Eastern Europe. It's an onion of grievances and all of us want to show we cry the hardest.
The problem is that none of us can bring back the dead. But each of us wants someone else to "do something". And that's not wrong, in principle.
Yes, build a monument, create a museum. Be proud of the past, be aware of the good and the bad. That said, I really wish we could move on. It's tiring. Europe can't be a giant WW2 museum forever.

@nprofile…dymg The way I see it, Ukraine can be given a bit of slack — they are in the middle of a war with Russia.
Poland is at peace. WW2 is over. Ukraine isn't going to start attacking Poland. WW2 is not a pressing issue the way that Russia killing Ukrainians every single day, right now, is.
IMO the least Poland can do is take a deep breath and work things out asap. But they're not doing this either. This is a type of escalation under the current circumstances.

De-escalation would be a good thing. But neither side seems to be particularly interested in it.
Will NATO allies come in and try to mend things? I think it's past time, but, unfortunately, nobody seems interested.

100% agree with this. We in Europe need to put pressure on our politicians too. Even though there are some that have called US actions illegal, and nobody is jumping at the chance to fight Trump's war, there's not really much of a response coming from us either.

Don't get me wrong, a good start is a good start. I get it.
That said: does Trump care if it's a good start? Does any American corporation care? No, not a single notable US CEO has spoken out against Trump. Not one.
So, which pillars have been eroded?
We're heading into something that looks more and more like WW3.
The gravity of the situation necessitates something more than a good start.

Bots, spam, identity theft and ransom...These are problems. There are hundreds of thousands of kidnapped slaves in Southeast Asia being tortured into scamming Americans and Europeans due in large part to our disinterest in identity verification. The tech community should start caring about those people.
If we don't, politics will do it for us without our input, and we're going to get more of this fascist dystopia.

The EU has their own analysts whose job is to design tariffs with minimal harm to the EU while maximizing pressure on US companies.
Or does the US exclusively export products to the EU/UK that we have no conceivable alternatives to?

@nprofile…uptt Maybe I misinterpreted your last question ('Is the reluctance basically a "slippery slope"?') as being more general in nature?
I'm coming from a HCI design & research background since the late 1990s. But only since I started to design and write my own open source software did I come to appreciate a more stubborn reluctance in design decisions.
I think we need new UX design approaches that are a better fit for FOSS. So much UX thinking is built around profit oriented engineering.

@nprofile…uptt Part of a good experience is trusting that my privacy is respected without having to personally read the code myself.
Trust erodes when every piece of FOSS is collecting. I'm talking systemic collapse. We've mostly reached that stage for the world wide web, it's barely usable due to data collection. Nobody wants this, so there's pushback.

@nprofile…hzyj The much maligned "EU bureaucracy" doesn't come for free. I pay my EU taxes to keep it running so that we can have a functional single market and all the benefits that come with it.
Why should a non-member country get those benefits for free?
