"I can't figure out the charger, so decide to leave it. There's still 76 per cent on the battery, so I'm not worried...Driving an EV has its benefits, but the trade-off is clear: save money but lose time...Charging my EV costs me about $35 (54 per cent of the battery). Filling the equivalent of half a tank of my petrol car would be roughly double that."
I can't believe we're still doing these stupid EV articles. This guy used an EV for 3 days, didn't actually need to charge once but insisted on trying to charge twice and waited an hour to charge to 100℅ and then complained about how long it took.
Most people charge at home and never need to think about it, if you're charging from a fast charger do it when you've got something else to do. Your car spends 95% of its life parked somewhere so plenty of time to charge while you're not there waiting for it.
You'll almost never need to charge to 100%.

I'm currently looking for work. I've been a software developer for 14yrs mainly working in small start-ups that make a webapp product (Ruby, Typescript, React) where I wear a lot of hats (support, devops, development, mentoring, and telling you that all the problems you're having is because your microservice architecture is over-engineered and insecure).
I'd like to work on something actually useful to people and I'd be less concerned about what I'm paid if I did.
Something that I'm less likely to burnout on would be great.
The AI slop phenomenon has really put me off so I've been thinking about changing careers, although I'm not sure what I'd do yet

We're shutting down Melbourne at 5:30pm on Monday Feb 9th at Flinders St to protest our Prime Minister inviting the Israeli President to Australia.
If you work in the CBD don't forget to bring your protest signs to work on Monday.

The Australian government is reinstating the EN-15194 standard requirement for e-bike imports (250W motor, restricted to 25km/h, as well as high battery quality and safety).
This means that imports of e-bikes will be restricted to only e-bikes that are to the standard that is currently street legal in Victoria.
This sensible import restriction was removed in 2021 which has resulted in a large number of imported e-bikes that are available for sale that aren't street legal and should only be used on private land which are instead being illegally used on public streets and paths.
This is really good. E-bikes should act and interact with the world around them like bicycles and not like motorbikes and it should be harder to purchase electric motorbikes that aren't street legal.

sure, there is a point in the night when coal powered generators need to be running(because they have a long ramp up time) but demand is low enough that gas plants aren't running so electricity is cheap.
Eg. At 2am in Queensland it will be 8c/Kwh

Lol, this is very funny move.
Wholesale power prices are already negative during the middle of the day, so this is just requiring retailers to pass that price directly on to customers without customers being exposed to the wholesale prices for the rest of the day.
Evening prices are so huge by comparison that having a free power for certain hours of the day won't mean that retailers have to increase evening prices to compensate.
Retailers are definitely mad about it because they've been selling free power during the day for a high mark up.

Whether you're planning for net-zero emissions by 2050 or not makes no difference to our electricity bills at this point in time.
Even if you don't care about emissions at all there isn't a way to make electricity cheaper that isn't renewables.
Electricity bills are high because gas is expensive and nobody wants to invest in a new coal power station at this point (companies barely want to invest in existing coal power stations)
The only long term path for lower electricity prices is increased renewables and we'd have been in a much better position if the Coalition hadn't spent a decade in power delaying new electricity infrastructure.
In the mean time we could bring down electricity prices a bit by forcing gas companies to supply the domestic market at a discount before they're allowed to export overseas.

Politically it's a nightmare. The trap is that anything that makes buying a house more affordable also increases the voting population that wants house prices to rise/stabilize (because they just brought a house).
60% of households have their wealth in a house. 30% of households would be financially ruined if house prices dropped significantly (and they need to drop significantly to be affordable) because they're still in debt to a bank.
The lobby to bring down housing costs is split between people that want to buy houses but can't yet afford them and people that will never be able to buy a house and want their rent to go down.
The first part of that lobby aren't going to vote for your housing affordability policies once the price is low enough they can purchase a house.
Owning housing makes everybody in to little capitalists.
Good Solutions:
- Public housing
- Increased tenant rights that make long term renting as nice as owning.

I'm continuously baffled at how motorists still manage to hit this bridge.
You have to drive past many warning signs and then you have run a red light, then hit these heavy hanging rubber poles and then you still have another 100m to realise you're a dickhead.

I really love these live streams from @npub1z7x…q5jf
This is Houten, a 5km² township about 10km outside of Uretcht, Netherlands.
It's got 2 train stations, a 60km/h ring road and a connection to a highway.
But most of the streets inside the ring road are 30km/h with modal filters to prevent through traffic and push cars out to the ring road which makes trips within the township quicker and easier by bicycle.
The built up area has a population density of about 4000/km² (weirdly comparable in size and density to where I live (Coburg, Melbourne, Australia)
All the road surfaces are narrow which provides a lot of space for grass and trees.
There are some more dense apartments and shops near the train stations.

yep, anything is better than nothing. But addressing the social causes of homelessness doesn't do anything if you don't address the lack of affordable housing cause of homelessness and Labor landlords don't want to do that.
I don't want to pat them on the back for emergency housing that just puts people straight back in to homelessness.

2025-05-07 08:07:58 UTC

Emergency housing is great for addressing homelessness, but it's not really the same as addressing the housing crisis.
This is short term housing to allow people to get out of an emergency back on their feet, but it's not helpful if they have no where to go after their short term is up.

The 30yr mortgage was a genius plan to sucker the working class in to supporting the wealth of the wealthy.
Our democracy is no longer able to do anything that would reduce the cost of housing because too much of the population put their meager savings in to their house and are in a difficult position if house prices dropped so won't support anything that would reduce the price of housing.
The real winners of this are the wealthy investors with many properties.

On Tuesday we were going to drive out to Bruthen and continue on from there but then we discovered the Gippsland Discovery Trail that follows an old tram way from Lakes Entrance.
So the plan changed to driving to Lakes Entrance and then riding the Gippsland Discovery Trail back up to the East Gippsland Rail Trail just past Bruthen and continuing on that to Orbost. (About 70km).
The Gippsland Discovery Trail was a bit rough and some very steep sections. But it's a beautiful ferny valley along the Mississippi Creek.
The Rail Trail from Bruthen to Nowa Nowa was really good, but the section from Nowa Nowa was a bit more rough.

We took the Frankston-Baxster trail to the Peninsula trail and then rode on the wide shoulder of Frankston-Flinders Rd to Sommerville where we could get on to the Sommerville to Hastings section of the Western Port Trail.
We stopped for coffee at Pelikan Société in Hastings and then rode through Warringine Park on the boardwalk to Wooleys Rd (which didn't have a shoulder and was 80km/h but really quite) and on to Stony Point Rd (which also had no shoulder but was pretty quiet) to catch the Ferry to Cowes on Philip Island with 5mins to spare.

My parents are taking me on a bike ride from Melbourne to Sydney via the coast.
We're mostly riding trails and avoiding highways so we're going to be driving between sections and taking the very long route.
The plan is to do it over 2 weeks but we currently only have a plan for the first 8 days which gets us to Orbost which involves ~500km of riding and ~150km of driving.
From Orbost we're probably driving to Eden. But we don't yet have a plan for where to go from there.

It was great to see the Infrastructure Victoria report acknowledge that building more roads doesn't fix traffic and that we need to stop trying to do that.
Building more roads to fix traffic is a weird fringe idea that has 60yrs of data to show that it doesn't work. Building freeways is an ideological and political position that has never been supported by data.

My partner got an e-bike a 2 months ago and went from someone that rarely rides and only rides with me to someone that rides everywhere on her own. She's ridden 400km since we got the bike in December which is more than she rode in the last decade on her manual bike.
She tried an e-bike 10yrs ago but got really self-conscious about it because she thought other cyclists were looking down on her for being fat and 'cheating' at cycling.
She's now doing an 8.6km commute three days a week to her horticulture course.
She got a Vyron Cumulus (https://vyronelectricbikes.com.au/product/cumulus-step-through-commuter/) from Vyron Electric Bikes on the Upfield Path in Brunswick.
$1530, hub drive with a ~50km range.

We definitely need more of this. People should feel ashamed and embarrassed to be driving these.

"NSW Police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to actions which threaten public safety and the safe passage of vessels,"
It's weird how they throw in that phrase "threaten public safety" when nobody is threatening public safety.

"How to mentally handle being a renter in Melbourne - especially moving every year"
Like most of the horrors of capitalism, fighting it in the small ways that you can may make you feel a little bit better.
Make as much noise as you can about it. Join the https://rahu.org.au/ , vote for the socialists (or the Greens), contact your local representatives every time you move and make sure they feel your anger and frustration and let them know you're not voting for them unless they fix this problem. This is a problem only really solvable through government policy changes and investment in public housing. Tell other people not to vote for the two major parties that caused this problem and campaign against them.
Did you vote in the recent council elections? Local councils have a lot of control over the housing supply so they hold a lot of responsibility for the current crisis, let them know that you know they're responsible.
I know many people with your same story, it sucks. Even people on above average incomes are struggling to guarantee themselves stable housing. I lost my well paying job earlier in the year just after being given a notice to vacate and had to stay on my parent's couch for a few months because even with a lot of savings I couldn't find a new rental while unemployed.
If enough people are mad about it and cause enough trouble this problem is solvable (but we'll probably need at least a decade to catch up on the lack of government investment)

Local Council Elections results are a bit of a mixed bag for active transport in inner Melbourne
City of Merri-bek looks good for a majority of councilors with good support for active transport.
City of Maribyrnong looks like it might be able to cobble together some majority for active transport.
City of Melbourne doesn't look like it's got enough support for expansion of active transport...but maybe enough to prevent it's removal.
City of Port Philip doesn't look like it has enough support for active transport and elected at least 2 councilors that were explicitly anti bicycle infrastructure.
City of Yarra is unclear but doesn't look good. Stephen Jolly's (Socialist) group of independents (YarraForAll) seems to have got a large number of the seats but none of them engaged with Streets People Love and I can't find any mention of active transport in any of their campaign materials.
City of Darebin had all the elected councilors engage with the Streets People Love survey...but most of them only got 1 or 2 ticks so not good support there.

"...cost of breaking a lease capped to four weeks' rent...landlords will no longer be able to evict tenants on fixed-term agreements for no reason."
These are good reforms. Fixed term leases are mostly bullshit, they're never long enough to give certainty to tenants so they massively advantage landlords.

Dropping the car isn't as much of an individual action as the other actions are. Dropping the car creates a virtuous cycle that makes it easier for others to drop the car too.

It's good to see this getting wider coverage. They knew these intersections where dangerous for years and could have fixed both issues in a week but chose to wait until there were deaths and life altering injuries.

2 votes. So if you run a business in the City of Melbourne and also live in the City of Melbourne you can get 3 votes.

The Liberal party candidate for Mayor of Melbourne is running on a platform of ripping up the bike lanes.
It's nice to see someone getting the word out.
