The term “artificial intelligence” is terrible. It carries so much baggage and it’s implying things that rightly make people feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, we’ve coined this apt new term, agent - it’s friendly, helpful, most importantly, not intimidating. I think I’ll use agent from now on.

I figured out how they're getting in. I left the Invitation feature of Mastodon on - any member could invite any other member. Once one bot got in they invited many others. I've disabled the invitation feature - alas - and I'm deleting the bots as fast as I can.

Well this is concerning.
I just suspended 14 Russian LLM generated bot accounts that were created around April 17 on my Mastodon instance, twit.social. Somehow they circumvented manual registration approval. I've turned on Captchas (much as I hate them) for new member requests in the hopes that will stop the bots. They must have discovered a registration bypass bug.
Thanks to IFTAS SW-ISAC for noting and reporting the bots.

Don’t kid yourself. “Artificial intelligence“ is just Big Tech’s way of saying “hey, it’s not our fault. It’s the machine’s!“ In point of fact, every malign use of “AI“ is really just some human-composed algorithm doing something that maximizes profit at the expense of people. We must not let these companies off the hook. They’re in charge. Not the machine. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.
