One thing I'm not hearing much about is how profoundly the Trump administration is revealing America's weaknesses to her enemies. Ten years ago it was widely assumed that our military was effectively unstoppable in a hot war. Now the entire world knows that it's not. We don't have sufficient missile defenses to protect our facilities. Our elections can be manipulated. Our leaders are avaricious dupes. We can be pwned.
It's a massive change. Theb idiots in D.C. destroyed not only America's soft power, but its hard power as well. When this is over, a country with only 5% of the world's population may have only 5% of the world's influence. You can decide whether that's sad or glorious; I believe it's sad, because for all our faults we've done more good than harm, but ymmv. Anyway, it's the truth.
The American Century is over. The French villagers who feted my father-in-law and his fellow soldiers from the 79th when they retraced their WW2 path by bus with their families in the 1960s would tell you that's not entirely good. But the country we've let ourselves become no longer deserves that adoration. For the world's sake, I pray someone else steps up.

I understand how you feel, but you're misunderstanding the nature of the disability. A miswired part of his brain actually identifies the most inappropriate thing to say in a given situation, and blurts it out. The words aren't random; medically, it's called coprolalia, which literally means "shit speaking." Wikipedia explains it correctly:
"Coprolalia encompasses the uncontrollable utterance of words and phrases that are culturally taboo or generally unsuitable for acceptable social use.... Involuntary outbursts, such as racial or ethnic slurs in the company of those most offended by such remarks, can be particularly embarrassing. The phrases uttered by a person with coprolalia do not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of the person as they are unconsciously produced."
In other words, a fucked-up part of his brain, over which he has no control, intentionally chose the n-word precisely because it was so offensive.
Yeah, it's a fucked up disability to have.

It's theoretically possible that someone with Tourette's would use their disability as cover to intentionally say something like that, but in my view the chances of that are vanishingly low.

Hoo boy. I have a lot of complicated thoughts and feelings around the BAFTA incident, in part because I have Tourette's (though, thank God, not coprolalia) AND am a lawyer/mediator specializing in disability accommodations (in educational settings). In a nutshell, though:
1. Unless he's a secret racist who shouted the n-word intentionally, the utterance itself truly was an involuntary act for which the speaker should not be blamed. Coprolalia isn't random; it makes people say the MOST transgressive thing possible in the context, which is exactly what happened here. It's troubling to me that some people refuse to accept this reality, which is a form of ableism.
2. The harm to Black people hearing that word nevertheless is extremely real, and the organizers completely fucked up both in how they structured the show and in responding to it afterwards. I understand that the speaker is a Tourette's activist, so I'm guessing both he and the organizers wanted some of the obscenities to be heard by the audience because, yeah, sometimes one person's disability is a little awkward for the people around them, and the people around them need to grow the fuck up and learn to accept it. But that doesn't mean that the harm to hearers can be ignored, especially when racist terms, not just obscene ones, are part of the person's known vocabulary. Disability accommodations require creativity and compromise; that doesn't seem to have happened here, other than a statement given to the audience at the start explaining his disability (which: good, but that approach alone fails to account for the substantial difference between ordinary vulgarities and racist obscenities). And the subsequent rationale that "Look, this is just the nature of Tourette's!" as if disability trumps racism is pitifully inadequate, because it ignores the harm to Black viewers. Tourette's sucks. Racism sucks. Don't minimize either one.
3. BBC has absolutely no excuse for not bleeping out the n-word even if they left in the other vulgarities, and for them to refuse to do so – to treat the n word as if it were no different than "fuck" – shows a profound insensitivity and colonialist mindset, and someone needs to get fired – especially because presumably the same person did bleep out "free Palestine!"

Thanks for being open instead of defensive! Usually I just do a keyword search then look for reputable sources among the garbage. In this case I just searched for the first few words from the plaque to see if I could find an independent description of where it's located (eg a Wikipedia page about it), and the factcheck was in the top few results.

In my 1982 training they told us that a USFS inspector found a pot field and was confronted by the grower with a shotgun but talked his way out of it by explaining that he only was interested in fire conditions and obv. the grower didn't want his crop to burn but then a week later the Mendo sheriff launched a pre-planned raid so the grower assumed the USFS guy had narced and a month later a FS helicopter was downed by rifle fire that hit the engine and the FS elected to report it as merely an engine malfunction because they didn't want to do Hatfields & McCoys.
This wisdom has remained with me and informed both my jaw and mediation practices for nearly 40 years now.

I fought fire in the Eighties in Mendo. We received as much training in not pissing off the dangerous pot growers and how to avoid their booby traps as we did in fire science.

We're not big pot smokers, but Lyricdancer *is* an inveterate gardener and thought, what the hell, and planted one cannabis plant.
One. One plant. Just one.
We've harvested, dried and cured about 5 oz of smooth sticky a.f. bud so far (roughly six quart jars), I spent much of the day wet trimming more harvest, three more branches are hanging in our spare bathroom, my fingers are crusty with resin, our house stanks like a 1970s surfer van, and I'm learning to roll joints (which I'm planning to give to our kids).
