Friendly reminder to Apple users, if your subscriptions suddenly get more expensive over the next couple months, it's probably not services or creators getting greedy. Apple is an insufferable bully about payments and is mandating a percentage of all subscriptions paid through their payment processing. Apple lost a court case against Epic, so now you can pay for things through alternative payments systems on the iPhone, but if you keep using Apple payment processing, they're going to try and make it look like the subscription is getting greedy. They're hoping services and creators will just eat the price hikes to not upset Apple users.
I doubt many services or creators will take that hit when Apple users can pay outside the App Store's greed.

For the folks that keep saying we need "lighter" phones for people, I seriously doubt there's a big market of people who want the LARGE phone surface area, but want to shave 30g of weight.

This story hits a bit different, as Tim Cook is directly implicated as the person behind these strategies, and it's possible (though unlikely) this could lead to criminal cases.
Above all though, Apple HAS to comply with the court's order now. Apple isn't being gracious or magnanimous. They finally have to stop putting in blocks or pain points for app developers wanting to use alternative payment systems.

Yeah. I have both Flexs still. They were solid phone, but obviously niche for the expensive components used. Durable as heck compared to today's glass sandwiches though.
It's nice that folks get all nostalgic for how good these old phones were, but it sure would have been nice if those folks getting nostalgic now had been more into the innovation when it was fresh.
I like Fisher a lot. I helped him pick out a mic when he left Pocketnow.
He also panned the G8, and I dont believe he ever reviewed the Velvet, V50, or V60. Instead opting for a video about whether "dual screen phones make sense".
So yeah. Phones were more fun when they were "wackier" but bigger channels ignored them at the time.

It's a shame because a LOT of folks never got to hang with the V20 because of the issues with the G4 and G5.
Then that whole train, G7, G8, V30, V40, V50 we're all INCREDIBLE devices. They went out making the most feature complete pocket computers ever. It's such a bummer.

Just saw a lovely little editorial nostalgic on LG phones, and the features they pioneered, like audiophile-grade headphone jacks. It's funny to me, being in this game as long as I have, that it came from a website that USED to be THE most critical of those features on LG phones. Hindsight is 20/20...
I used to get into HEATED debates about how to test those features, and present the value of those features to consumers. Often, the result was just to keep promoting what was already most popular in the market, instead of "challenging" readers to look at alternative devices.
Still, it's always a fun opportunity to trot out this old editorial I wrote about headphone and audio testing, and how most smartphone reviewers really didn't know ANYTHING about what they were discussing.

it's frustrating also because the on-device machine learning stuff can be really helpful.
Things like camera autofocus have evolved radically thanks to better subject identification and eye tracking.
Or speech to text translation that can happen in almost real time to bring captioning as an accessibility feature. Just two examples off the top of my head.
We've dumped all this BS into a bucket CALLED "AI", but the really interesting practical stuff is now getting eclipsed by the tech bro marketing nonsense.
But otherwise, you know I TOTALLY agree, that more practical ports, memory expansion, replaceable batteries, and the ability to USE this incredible compute power in more areas would be GREATLY appreciated.

It's getting really frustrating to see how AI is playing out in the mobile space.
Every year, we nerds demand silicon and performance improvements, but now the chip prices have climbed so high that it's starting to eat away at other component costs on EXPENSIVE phones.
Camera sensors THIS year might be down grades from camera sensors LAST year, because the chips got more expensive.
This is partly in service to hawking all this AI bullshit, but the snazziest new AI features coming to phones are mostly performed on data centers and in the cloud.
So, we're paying for these insanely powerful chips, that AREN'T doing the AI on-device much, and likely paying more for similar or downgraded productivity and photography features, all to INCREASE the demand on data centers (eating up more water and electricity).
The phone likely could have replace MOST consumer needs for laptops and desktops today, but instead we're trying to drive more cloud computing.
It's really disappointing.

It's just kinda weird how tech cycles. I REALLY BADLY wanted a Switch, but I convinced myself to hold out for a refresh or the rumored "Switch Pro" all those years ago.
Then along the way, Steam Deck arrived, and it scratched that portable gaming itch.
From Steam and Humble Bundle sales, to free games on Epic and GoG, also reinforcing regularly, how much cheaper it is to buy games for PC.
Switch 2 looks really solid. I'm sure it's going to be a great siloed experience.
I dont think it's for me.

Gave myself a challenge to find fun ways to frame the Taj Mahal. It's absolutely stunning to see in person. I like how these shots turned out.

It’s almost like we totally could have predicted this over the last year of Windows on ARM!
Basically, the experience has improved to the point, where I don’t think many people will know that anything is different. Some of the core issues will obviously arrive from BETA software and X86 drivers, but what does that actually look like now? Well, it looks pretty darn good.

It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about #Windows Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.
It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.
It's inescapable.
It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.
It won't matter if you're a master #security expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.
If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.
I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."
