your application sounds interesting. seems you would be able to limit the effectiveness of the sensor in various ways such as neutral density filters. a prime lens would have no zoom.
and you can always set the camera for lower resolutions.
of course a low end early digital body at six megapixels would be dirt cheap, but those low end nikons can't drive the afd lenses autofocus.
but I'm coming to the conclusion I have no idea what you're trying to do 🤣

anyway, if buying an older used body is an option for you, check out keh.com - I've just now discovered them. They appear to have a warranty of some kind and a farily sophisticated grading mechanism..
