i was being facetious (obviously), but what i was kinda getting at was more that it'd be cool to have a scheme that combines the best features of various existing ones, sorta like transformers or power rangers. when i start out on a project, i don't know which features i'm going to need later, then once i realize i'm using the wrong scheme, it's a pita to port something over. then i dive into another scheme, until i realize it has some other annoyance that turns out to be a deal-breaker for my project or way of working. but also, the amount of labour power you mention is also a function of the fragmentation, right? if many of those folks were working on the same lang, or rather if they were not so divergent in their concrete implementations, then the effort to implement r7 large might be more easily shared/pooled. (i'm not one to complain about fragmentation basically ever, feels like a first!) maybe i'm just frustrated by the opacity of the differenes, like i don't notice what they are until too late. maybe i should learn to select dialects more discerningly...
i find it interesting too that something like modules is or wasn't well standardized. it's maybe external to the bread and butter, but it's central to how any program will work.

i took a look at chicken recently as i was also looking for a scheme that could easily make (small, portable) binaries and share them. two things i found crazy so far: keyword arguments are formatted #!keyword in function definitions, and a module's functions are located in the body of a "module" call. i find the latter very confusing, when i edit a single function and evaluate it interactively, the entire wrapping module call is evaluated. i find this baffling. i feel like i'm being punished for wanting to do something simple.

off the top of my head, IIRC Thomas Mann said he carried "Tonio Kröger" around in his brain for like 10 years before writing it. (no wonder the story is perfection itself.)
Federici's Caliban and the Witch is the result of decades of work (and avowed procrastination) on a constellation of related topics. (no wonder no one else managed to write it.)
i recently wrote two essays i've been "meaning to" write for ~4+ years. (they took much less time to write than usual, they'd been thought through so much.) but then there's the q of how do you "think" while also supposedly avoiding thinking...
Poet Jack Spicer often described how many hours he would sit waiting for the voices to come to him from the Outside. (and developed a theory of it, called "dictcation", over the course of his whole life.)
maybe this isn't so exceptional in the humanities, or in (certain parts of) the (rapidly collapsing) academy.
i find programming's proximity to the (pseudo-, but still) instanteneity of CPU execution makes for wanting stuff to also get done/solved instantly/rapidly. (happens to me.)

one of the things that is hard to accept, with AI, be it for coding or translating or other natural language composition, is that humans are held to very high standards regarding such activities, whereas the AI is allowed to produce mediocrities and people tolerate it. there's often a tacit admission that we don't really care what the words say, what the code does.

probably not the question you want to hear, but why can't gtk do what you want? i know nothing about gui programming, but my thought is shouldn't it be able to do it, because vanilla emacs already exists in gtk gui zones? (clearly not.)

i'm not sure, i just checked what i use for such things, which is PDF Arranger, but it looks like it doesn't have a feature to generate outlines. the only other way i have done it is using a crazy outline generator package in emacs. maybe there are other options out there somewhere tho...

new release of fj.el, an #emacs #forgejo / #codeberg client. it adds:
- pagination of most views
- generic next/prev page functions
- generic reload engine, making it trivial to reload a specific view while changing a single parameter
- basic milestones support (add to existing issue, add while composing, display when viewing)
- new macro to handle optional parameters (in fedi.el), makes handling the full API much easier
- render item markdown using instance API (removes need for markdown binary)
- use server default for limit arg always
- mark notification read upon viewing item
- toggle notifications view read/unread/all
- cycle notification type
- list issues by milestone/label
- render PR review diffs and discussion in PR view
- display/add/remove reactions
- implement font-locking of issue numbers/user handles while composing
- add labels while composing
- fix multibyte encoding errors
- handle repos that you do not own yourself (via git)
- quote region in reply buffer
- cycle list own items by state and type (accross all repos)
- handle auth-source for encrypted access tokens
- support repos on different Forgejo instances via .dir-locals.el settings.
there's much need for improvement still, but it's coming along well.

i have a question: just now i was rate limited using my emacs forgejo client, fj.el. if i post a comment to an issue/PR, it does succeed, but i also receive your rate limiting response, 429. it happened on my first POST request to the codeberg.org API today, from a home internet connection (no vpn) without a static IP. GETting issues/PRs/item timelines seems fine. perhaps the limiting needs some tweaking still? i can't see how a single post would overstep anything.
i just did a test from the Gitnex android client, and it also errored despite the POST actually succeeding and the comment appearing.

if it works for some people and not for others, i would aim to reproduce in a minimal emacs.
edit: i had a crack: minimal emacs with very basic org settings and org-appear loaded via straight from the git repo. it works ok for me like that still, same versions of emacs/org as before.
it's a dilly of a pickle. but that suggests to me that there's something else interfering that it is clashing with.

i was curious so i took a look, but it seems to work for me (emphasis markers at least).

any details on how to reproduce? could it not just be a byte-compile issue as the maintainer seemed to think?

maybe this is the same issue?: https://github.com/zk-phi/symon/issues/44. it's probably relatively easy to get going again, but the stacktrace provided is unfortunately full of compiled functions and bytecode...
edit: maybe you can create a stracktrace using uncompiled code so its helpful?

anyone have an actually nice way to do rapid web (or wikipedia) searches in emacs?
e.g. a DDG in EWW returns ~3 links per result (hard to keyboard nav that), and the page is super hard on the eyes. i'd be happy to stay in emacs for really simple basic lookups.
search results as completing-read could be interesting?

yeah it is, i used it in lem.el.
i just think it's overkill programming-wise. i'm just after a simple two-column table with maybe 2-20 rows. just for neatness, and maybe a clickable option down one column.
for display of filter keywords in mastodon.el. they each have an option to match whole words only, or not.

is there any good way to generate simple interactive tables? (for mastodon.el this time)
like a table with list of item names, next to each of which you could have a clickable boolean option for each.
(for this kind of option, vtable.el seems like overkill, it seems more designed for almost-entire-buffer tables.)
if emacs is to compete with react and vue, it really needs to get its tables in order! :laughing:
