Looking for data-rescue efforts that are newbie-friendly. In initial discussions of a possible data-rescue-thon sometime spring semester.
Newbie-friendly most likely means:
* good workflow documentation
* no software installation needed (or at LEAST make it minimal and cross-platform)
* automation-friendly, but by-hand work (e.g. dataset metadata) also available
* a clear destination for completed work

In fairness to Elsevier, I was talking to a colleague just yesterday on how stigmatized it obviously is in many circles to call gen-AI the con job it is.
These circles emphatically include way too much of academe. I read my colleague the bit from the introduction to AI Snake Oil about how its authors called out AI papers for arrant bullshit but their critique was deemed unpublishable.

Hah. The reason my new MacBook was rebooting during sleep appears to be that the keyboard cover I put on it only has half-height covers in the top row, so the cutout for the power button wasn't big enough. The half-key cover there was pressing the power button during sleep.
Guess those affordances are real real thin. I fixed it by cutting off the offending key cover. Seems fine now.

And let's not mince words: if IA thought they could replace libraries and librarians, they'd do it in a hot minute.
They don't give a SHIT about libraries or librarians. I've had IA people diss my work TO MY FACE.
We're just convenient rhetorical shields for them doing whatever the hell they want and making everything all about them.
I hate that they have such a huge following among otherwise-fairly-sensible people.
I definitely hope Kyle Courtney wises up.

He's the guy who said in 2016 that radiologists would be wholly obsoleted by AI in 2021.
Even if true, which it wasn't (and this is far from Hinton's only AI-related whopper), what an asshole move.
He's currently Prodigal Techbroing around, pretending to be Oh So Scared of AI so that people will pay attention to him again.
