Yes, you are right-- we need enough solar+battery for when the sun goes down. I understand it is abou 6x, and you cite 8x.
so a 1GW datacenter would take 6-8GW of solar. it is less than $1/W to installed, so $6-8Billion which is alot until you calculate what the servers will cost, and also the investment that is going into this sector, and that this may be the easiest way for these guys to get the power they need. (and no new long distance power lines if co-located)

2026-07-19 00:32:21 UTC

Happy news: in 2025 global new installed 814GW of wind and solar (solar is 664GW). china solar factories at 1/2 capacity! (US installing, but slowly, but you know that and why). big batteries working and improving
a nuclear power plant is 1GW -- why still talk nuclear?
so 1GW datacenters is one of siting correctly with local solar+batteries. could be not a big deal
The water use is not consequential if sited with thought
rare good news

Better Rideshare: Airport Ubers lined up, and you can get into ANY car, driver scans your QR code, and go. Immediately.
No 10-20 minute delay. No clog to match riders to cars.
This is how Taxi's work, but they are more expensive and no universal app. This is how Waymo could work, but they are not at most airports yet. A new competitor might do well with this trick: "AirRide"?
Many people have opted for rideshare-- lets have it work better. Other ideas?

All the waymo are electric, which is good in my book.
and yes, they can optimize themselves as rolling batteries.
Maybe they could stop by local solar farms.
Maybe they could time when to recharge.
I like that they are starting to park themselves in between trips in SF (of course it causes a ruckus). (I see many many waymo's "dead heading" in other words: driving with no passengers).

ride hailing trips in SF (helped by chatgpt).
Uber: ~54%
Lyft: ~26%
Waymo: ~8%
Taxis: ~11%
so while waymo's seem to be everyhere, they are only 10% of lyft/uber
total/day ~150k
Uber (ride-hail). ~82k-90k/day
Lyft (ride-hail) ~38k–45k
Waymo (robotaxi) ~13k
Taxis (traditional) ~15k–20k

"The very first question to be considered is the applicability of the Copyright Law to the Moon. "
Thinking ahead (in 1953) about interplanetary copyrights :). if aliens have "Two Heads, Two Authors?"
really fun, worth reading.

Carl-- you have a vocals version here: https://archive.org/details/140folksongsrote00unse.147.omr/140folksongsrote00unse.147.vox.wav
is it generated? it sounds so good.
again, you are a step ahead of me!

That is super! I love the interactive controls. (the terms on the output seem draconian, but I will assume this is dicussable).
I wonder a voice track could be added in, given the lyrics and words.
the idea of this being a tool to help others sing the song sounds appropriate, as others could perform the songs and upload them (hopefully with video).

Please hit upload and link-- I think this could be a golden era for open/free music.

Do you know people that would be up for this, maybe as a contest?
we could have prizes, we could have in-person concerts with multiple groups, we could generate lots of open/free music.
We would bring 100 year old music to a new audiences. We might be a bunch of people singing.
I would really like to hear shape-note singing like they do at Bread and Puppet.

I love the idea of open music collections. Some with be AI assist, most not.

Another Grange music book... Just in case we get on a roll https://archive.org/details/songsforgrangese00wage/page/n1/mode/2up
Maybe wont break the billboard 100, but it would be wonderful to get open recordings of old songs.

2025-12-14 01:16:00 UTC

project idea (possibly using AI): record a take of songs from old sheet music books
Starting with something like the Grange book of sheet music below and record them ... Apparently the music can get to midi via Play Score 2, and other programs can could sing the lyrics.
or better yet, if anyone wants to perform the songs and upload them to the archive, you could link it into a review of the book.

Lets build an open alternative, and then compensate musicians directly (rather than all the middlemen and lawyers)
I wonder how the @npub1umd…wfr7 could help.

This seems to opens the door to work on important problems, for instance building a solid climateGPT in Europe.

The idea is to find others that want to do this, and how the @npub1umd…wfr7 can improve.

Solar panels are not part of the picture, and even if they were, it would not amount to much power, unfortunately.

$0.50 per mile for electricity for a semi truck? wow, lower than I would imagine. (and it can be as low as $0.12 where rates are lower.).
"During testing, the truck averaged 1.72 kWh per mile while hauling a gross combined weight of 75,000 pounds (34 metric tons) over a 390-mile (625 km) long-haul route."
a tesla model 3 is ~0.3 kWh per mile.

I have been looking for this as well.
There are now 1,000 waymo's in the bay area and 2,500 total (I read somewhere recently), so we are probably at the scale to be able to tell the difference between an incremental operator and a developer.
If anyone finds numbers for this, I would love to know.

having the waymo's running around SF continues to amaze and delight me. And they are popular.
personally, I am looking forward "cat buses" -- autonomous electric multi-person golf cart-like things that are super cheap to hop on and hop off. like the shared cars in havana, but does not waste a person's time to drive it.

"a public health imperative to quickly expand the adoption of autonomous vehicles."
"Waymo recently released data covering nearly 100 million driverless miles ... When compared to human drivers on the same roads, Waymo’s self-driving cars were involved in 91 percent fewer serious-injury-or-worse crashes and 80 percent fewer crashes causing any injury. It showed a 96 percent lower rate of injury-causing crashes at intersections...deadliest I encounter in the trauma bay."

(I think made possible with recent massive grid-scale batteries allows evening out of renewables)
California now runs 5pm-8pm electricity use on batteries. Turn off more plants cuz can plan for a full day.
Thoughtful article on wholesale electricity grid coordination markets. Sounds dry, but cool:

And in gated communities, like in Palm Springs. Now San Francisco.
Americans can keep the SUV in the garage and drive LSVs.
