I'm starting to kick around ideas for a #FASP for social feeds. @npub1764…nuj0 has suggested one for global hashtags, and the #Fediscovery folks are doing one for search. It feels like "feeds" is a missing & @npub13fk…z5hw, @npub1ekk…vy6m and @npub142g…kmy5 and others have great feeds in the wild now. And I think, correctly me if I'm wrong @npub1fd2…f2f9 that the exact new feed format is being sussed out at the WC3. I think maybe the time is right to consider what a Feeds FASP might be. My point: there isn't just one "fediverse wide proper goal" and there need not be.
For some communities its goal is to be it's own focused cadre of folks on more or less one topic for others its more general and mixed use and not one thing, more or less a ton of general things.

My take: community servers are not one thing across the fedi, nor need they be. General purpose servers might have relatively indestinct local feeds from each other, like a big food court. The above was short hand for also assuming no admin set anything up for their users w/o several warnings to all, only applied to new, & were very clear to new users onboarding. Just saying giving each server ability to do opt in/out policies that’s culturally a fit for their server culture & needs seems a good idea — assuming the above plus that each user has full agency to overrule that for themselves should they wish.

I actually like the idea that at a server by server level, the choice of opt in, versus opt out can be appropriate for each community. And that the community servers can make that call, rather than a fediverse-wide fiat at what is best for everybody. Different communties have different cultures and different needs. As long as the end user has ultimate agency, which in this case they 100 percent do.

Do agree that we ned to play to the open social web's strengths and some of those strengthers are offering experiences that the big silos can't or won't and not just producing a decentralized clone of each existing mainstream platform.
